Board: Put MTHS In Rightful Slot

COURT HOUSE - The Middle Township Board of Education wants a recount — not of votes, but of the Middle Township High School enrollment. At stake is the school's classification in Group III for athletics, which puts it in competition with much larger schools. The local school is the smallest in Group III, with the next smallest having 50 more students. AT THE BASE of the problem is the 1985-86 Enrollment Report form of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, which is set up so that some students will be counted twice if instructions are followed. According to the instructions. Classified Pupils i students with special learning problems who are classified by their handicaps) should be added to i

e the Total Pupil Enrollf ment, inflating that figure. 1 On two occasions. Dr e Theodore Johnson, i superintendent of schools and a member of the > NJSIAA executive commit1 tee. appealed to the comt mittee to accept the correct > figure, reclassifying the school into its proper divi- • sion. Group II. > THE APPEAL was voted down twice because the NJSIAA didn't want to reschedule the teams involved and because it has a policy that reconsideration which moves a district into a lower division will not be granted. The board of education has authorized the superintendent to petition the state Commissioner of Education to review the case expeditiously, enjoining the Group II and Group III winter championships if necessary.
