Nearing 50 Years On County Board
• By GREGG LAWSON GREEN CREEK - "as far as I know, she is the longest-serving Welfare Board member in the state of New Jersey." That's Freeholder Gerald Thornton talking about Dolda McCIain, 85, who has served almost continuously on the county Welfare Board since its inception in 1938. She was reappointed to the board at the freeholder's Jan. 4 reorganization meeting, after recovering from an illness that kept her out several months. She returns as secretary treasurer, a position she has filled 20 of her 46 years of service. THORNTON KEPT her seat vacant, he said.
because she has been such a "viable member of the board." "Her conduct and behavior have always been examplary," Thornton said. "She's a caring person who is concerned about people in the county and the county itself." McCIain and her husband, Allan, married in 1918 and recently celebrated their 68th anniversary. They moved to Green Creek from Delmont in 1921. Since then, McCIain has been active in local politics and civic and church groups. SHE HAS belonged to the Women's Republican Club since 1921, and was a Republican Party committeewoman for 25 years. Both she and her husband belong to the National Grange A lot of her time has been dedicated to organizing dinners and fund raisers for the above-mentioned groups and the Green Creek Methodist Church. During World War II, she directed a group of 12 women who made dressings for wounded American soldiers. "She exemplifies the type of community service that is often unsung," said Freeholder William E. Sturm Jr. McCLAIN IS one of six citizen members of the board, which also includes ] Freeholders Thornton and James S. Kilpa trick, Jr. and County Adjustor Joel A. Mott III. The board meets monthly to approve expenditure of funds recommended by freeholders and the state
Department of Human Services. As secretary treasurer, she certifies expenditures and signs checks. She was appointed to a five-year term. "I hope that five years from now, I can nominate her again," Thornton said. "It will be a sad day when she is no longer with us. "It's so unusual to find a person willing to serve 50 years in a non-paying position, which is how long it will be when her term expires," he added. "I don't think there's a way to say 'thank you' for all she's done."
