I sat in bed, holding my swollen jaw, staring at the clock. "Doom's day," I said to The Hubby. "Two hours to go ." "Actually, you probably have less than two hours," said The Hubby. "I think that clock is slow." "Thanks a lot for telling me that," I said miserably. The Hubby went to the drawers at his side of the bureau and rummaged throught his sweaters. "DO YOU THINK the blue and gray sweater will go with these socks?" he asked. "Huh?" I said. "Maybe I shouldn't wear the blue and gray sweater," said The Hubby. "The brown and blue sweater might be better with these socks. What do you think?" "1 realy don't know what they're wearing this year in the waiting rooms of oral surgeons," I said. "Hmmmm," said The Hubby. He went to the closet and pulled out a pair of gray trousers. Then he pulled out a pair of brown trousers. "BLUE Oft BROWN with the brown and blue sweater, or blue or browfr with the blue and gray sweater?" asked The Hubby. "I don't believe this." \ said. "You don't believe that I want to wear either the blue or brown trousers with the brown and blue sweater, or with the blue and gray sweater?" asked The Hubby. "Here I am less than two hours away from having an infected impacted widom tooth extracted and have to help you decide which sweater to wear with which pairs of pants, ' I said. "We haven't even considered which socks will carry it all off," said The Hubby. "YOUR SOCKS?" I said. "Who's going to see therp?" "Well, 1 might cross my legs while I'm waiting for you to come out. Someone might see that they don't match. They might stare at me. They might wonder what kind of wife I have who would let me go to an oral surgeon's office not wearing the right clothes." said The Hubby. "I hadn't thought of that," I said. "All I've done is worry about things like pain. Things like suffering. Junk like that while you have to cope with life and death matters like whether your socks look right with your sweater, just in case you cross your legs while I'm being extracted." Continuing our discussion of the low blood count, today we will cover iron deficiency anemia. Until about a generation ago insufficient iron in the diet was one of the primary causes suspect when we found a low blood count. Today it is fairly uncommon, because not only do Americans eat rather well compared to much of the world, but so many of our foods have vitamins and iron already added to them, for example milk and bread. t Not to mention all the iron supplements people take, whether they need them or not. I HAVE occasionally seen adults with a low blood count due to poor diet ; most often it is a depressed elderly person who has lost a spouse and is not troubling to prepare balanced meals for his or herself. Also, more commonly than I would like, people put ; themselves on one of the fad weight reduction diets, many of which are not balanced for necessary nutrients. Even some of the better known diets written by doctors are being criticized for lack of nutrient balance, so be careful. ANOTHER REASON for lack of adequate iron in the body may be that your digestive tract has been altered or is not functioning properly. Anyone who has had part of the stomach removed may find that the body's ability to absorb iron from food is impaired. Diseases such as ulcertaive colitis and Crohn's l

Disease can also limit the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Loss of blood in itself will reduce iron stores. Temporary loss of blood is usually self corrected by the body ; the iron stores will be rebuilt over time. HOWEVER. IT is the slow, steady loss of blood and iron from ulcers, varices, cancer, kidney diseases and such that makes the blood count such a useful diagnostic clue in uncovering problems that might otherwise remain hidden. Iron deficiency anemia is not usually life threatening unless coupled with something like cancer. It is usually correctable by taking iron supplements provided all possible other treatable diseases that cause anemia - have been ruled out. COVERING UP your symptoms by artificially raising your blood' count through giving yourself iron supplements canbe1^ terrible mistake. Bloodtransfusions may be given in the case of a severely low blood count, as this can be life threatening. Never treat your own case of anemia, or symptoms you believe to reflect anemia. Also, seek your doctor's advice for treatment of this condition.
