Sandman Still Controversial «
WEST CAPE MAY - Even in death late Superior Court Judge and former U.S. Rep. Charles W. Sandman is controversial. Some people didn't like Sandman because of his right wing views. And even in Republican Party circles, Sandman fell out of favor for bucking candidates backed by county GOP leaders in 1978; he was censored for it. In West Cape May, where he once served as borough solicitor, he was removed from the party rolls. Now that he is dead, a lot of public officials have been proposing various ways to memoralize him, such as naming roads or ferries for him. So Borough Commissioner Edward Reeves thought it was time for the local GOP club to reinstate Sandman posthumously. Reeves made the suggestion at a recent borough commission meeting, but it was greeted with something less than enthusiasm. \ The proposal was ig-\ nored by the press, and \ Reeves was advised by ^ political colleagues that it might not be a good idea. •SOME OF THEM HAVE relatives with county jobs and I was told to be careful," Reeves said in a weekend interview. "I had considered taking it (the suggestion) to the West Cape May Republican Club, but I didn't." "I figured if they were going to name a road after him it would be consistent to reinstate him in the Republican Party," said Reeves. State Sen. James R. Hurley has proposed changing the name of Lin- i coin Boulevard-Ferry Road to Charles W. Sandman Memorial Highway in Lower Township. But 69 residents of the road petitioned against the change last week because i it would be a hardship to i senior citizens. They would have to apply for new credit cards, " i
driver's licenses and Social Security cards if the name were changed. Lower Councilman Joseph Lonergan and Deputy Mayor Peggie Bieberbach came up with alternative proposals but no action was taken on any of them until Lonergan and Mayor Robert Fothergill discuss them with Cape May-Lewes Ferry officials. Bieberbach proposed naming a ferry after Sandman. Lonergan suggested naming a proposed ferry terminal "Charles Sand- / man Plaza," or access— roads as "Charles Sand^^ man Boulevard." SANDMAN IS CREDITED with holding up funding for the Delaware Memorial Bridge until the ferry was approved. His loyalty Ao former President Richard M. Nixon during the Watergate investigation cost him his Congressional seat ; he lost it to Democrat William Hughes more than a decade ago. Local GOP hassles lost v him the support of party leaders and cost him pktronage jobs in county government. Republican fences were mended somewhat when Sandman and ctanty GOP chairman PhilipVt. Matalucci patched the quarrels; they were in-laws. A Found ^qualified by the local bar] association's Judicial Selection Committee, Sandman, with Matalucci^ backing, was nevertheless named over 12 other candidates for a $70,000 a year Superior Court judgeship in 1984. The former state legislator and acting governor died of a stroke last August. AARP Meeting CAPE MAY — Victorian Cape May Chapter 691, will meet at the Victorian Towers Wednesday, Feb. 12. Social hour is at noon and meeting at 1 o'clock.
