Warriors Beat Hammonton, Absegami

BOY'S BASKETBALL produced four wins in last week's action for Cape May County. Wildwood Warriors put two notches in their gun as they out-shot Hammonton and Absegami. Pete Johnson, Paul Franco and Joe Vallese led Wildwood with seven points apiece for a 49-44 win over Hammonton. Franco excelled for 28 counters and hauled 16 boards to lead Wildwood to an 87-71 snatch from Absegami. Warrior Torey Harris collected 26 points and Steve Severio hit for 1 1 for the winners. as they downed Lower Cape May ajnd Pleasantville. Five Panthers in double figures was a tough statistic for the Capers to beat, so Middle took a 77-60 victory over Lower. Dion Coley tallied 25 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Watkins and Eddie Bryan contributed 14 each and Maurice Hubbard put 13 up in lights. Chris Sellers donated 11 points and 10 boards to the winners. Against Pleasantville, Dion Coley canned 23 points to lead Middle to a 70-62 Division III tilt. Coley's eight third-period points propelled the Panthers to a 47 37 lead. Eddie Bryan collected 13 points and Mike Watkins had 10 for the winner.

A 29-27 clincher over Buena was the higher score of the week. It was 27-27 tie at the end of regulation time and Crusader Kate Caruso hit the only bucket in overtime.

Avalon Students In State's Final

AVALON - Two students from the Avalon Elementary School, Michele Conklin and John Kauterman, will compete Sunday, Feb. 16, in the state finals of the Elks National Free Throw Contest at Bordentown Regional High School. They won the right to compete at the state finals by winning their age classes at the Southern Meeting Set On Volleyball CAPE MAY - An organizational meeting for the city Coed Volleyball Leagues will be held Thursday. Feb. 13. at Convention Hall. Those interested in having a team in the power league should attend at 6:15 p.m. . District Contest, held at the Cape May County Alternative School Dec. 21. Michele sank 18 out of 25 baskets ; John, 15 out of 25. MICHELE AND John were two of eight Avalon students who won their age classes at initial competitions held at Avalon Elementary School. The other winners were: Maggie Trainor, Robert Scott. Cindy Matalucci. Donnie Echevarria, Leslie Matalucci, and Joseph Kauterman. This group competed at the Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge 18% Subordinate Contest held at Middle Township's Middle School Dec. 14. Bill Dougherty, local director of the Elks competition, presented Michele, John, and Maggie Trainor with first place trophies; Scott and Leslie Matalucci won second place trophies.

After a Caruso score with two minutes left to play, Buena held the ball, look ing for the last shot until the team committed a turnover at the 14 second mark. Gayanne Spivey accounted for 18 of Buena 's 27 points while Caruso led the winners with 12. Catholic topped St. Joe 28-15 in later action. St. Joe owned a 13 to 12 lead going into the final quarter when Wildwood Catholic went on a 16-2 spurt to capture the win. Kate Caruso paced Catholic once again with 12 points and Gina Commerford led St. Joe with 7. MIDDLE'S LADY PANTHERS were the onl^omep^girls' team to record wms in the county 1st weeK, as they snagged a win from Ocean City and one from Lower Cape May. The score was knotted at 50-50 with one second remaining when a technical foul was called the Ocean City bench. Middle's Bev Grant hit the game winner from the foul stripe to silence the Raiders 51-50. Grant tallied 11 points, five steals and six assists. Cori Obsorne led the Panthers with 13 points while Betsy Gilbert added 11 counters and 10 rebounds. The Raiders were paced by Judy Eckerson and Lisa Crompton with 16 apiece. The Panthers crushed Lower Cape May 66-20 Friday as Bev Grant Poured in 30 points. Betsy Gilbert snatched 16 boards and Cori Osborne added nine points and four blocked shots for Middle's 10th straight win of the season.

Swimmers Dunked Despite 21 Wins

CAPE MAY - This cityswim team lost to visiting Millville 253-177 in a swim meet held this past weekend at the Elementary School. Despite the loss contestants picked up 15 individual first place wins and six firsts in the relays. Leading the way was Christine Laskey, who picked up first first place wins including individuals in the 50 Fl. 100 Bk and the 100 IM Michael Campbell and Eric Axelsson had four first place wins apiece. Campbell's individual wins came in the 100 Bk and the 100 IM while Axelsson came in first in the 100 Br and 50 FI. TOO!) DESATMCK. Steve Mogck and Jason Phillips contributed with three first place wins apiece. DeSatnick's individual firsts came in the 50 Br and 50 Fl while Mogck won the 100 Fr and Phillips. 100 IM. George Arscott in the 25 Fr, Donnie Piacentine in the 25 Bk, Chad deSatnick in the 25 Br and Stephanie O'Connor in the 50 Fl rounded out the individual first place wins. Heidi Andrus and Barbara McCasland had two first place wins in the relay events. Other swimmers
