Punting in the Cape is not associated historically with high school football. Rather, it is a term used to designate the professional killing of waterfowl for sale at city markets. The gun used by these professional hunters < known as market hunters* was called a punt gun. It was more like a homemade cannon. rather than today's hunting shotgun. TXE AMD R-OORTMG The HI CARPET FXCHAMGE by linda larkin to*® for removing stubborn stains Although resilient floors are made more durable and resistant to stains, you should still be prepared to cope with problem stains. Here are some tips on what to use to safely remove the more stubborn stains your floor may encounter. Household stains from foods, acids, ink, mustard, lipstick and almost all other materials can be removed with just a damp cloth. Rubber heel marks can be removed with lighter fluid or painters naptha. However, caution is advised when using these. You must avoid open flames. Wet stains such as paint, varnish, nail polish remover, etc. should be blotted up immediately. Carefully remove excess with a dull knife. Afterward, wash normally with water and sudsy ammonia. Gummy stains from materials such as lacquer, nail polish, chewing gum, grease, candy, adhesives. oil"~~ and wax should be removed with a dull knife. Other stains such as rust, mildew, dyes, blood, grass urine, etc. should be washed in the normal manner. If stain persists use a 10 percent solution of oxalic acid ; which is available at your local drug store. For shellac stains, wash normally. For extra attention, rub lightly with a cloth dipped in alcohol, then rinse. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads or scouring powder. After these cleaning procedures, a dry buffing restores normal lustre. person and had to be fired with the gun resting on a stand of some type. The length of the gun varied from six feet to those over 12 feet. Many of the longer punt guns used in the county were constructed of seamless high pressure steam pipe and mounted on the how of a punt boat (skiff*. Bags of sand. oats, hay. or sea grass were used to soften the gun's recoil. FIRED AT waterfowl sitting in the cays and marshes of the Cape or fired soon after the birds took to flight, often as many as 30 birds were killed with one shot Most market hunters had daily quotas placed upon them, so by using a punt gun. these daily quotas could be met. Game was so plentiful that many local hunters supplied the waterfowl demands of meat markets in the larger cities, especially Philadelphia BY THE TURN of the century. Cape May saw many residents supplementing their incomes as market hunters With the advent of the automatic shotgun, punt guns slowly disappeared as the favorite weapon for market hunters, yet could still be found in use within the county With the punt guns boom ing and the rapid fire of the automatic shotguns echoing throughout the marshlands, the once plentiful waterfowl resources were being depleted at an astounding rate. BY I9IK, the United States Federal Fur. Fish, and Wildfowl Service outlawed the use of the punt gun. and New Jersey established limits and restrictions on waterfowl hunting Few people have seen a Cape May County punt gun, and fewer still own one Those familiar with these - deadly hunting tools, can look at them and remember how the marshes of Cape May County once fed the demand for waterfowl for the city of Philadelphia and how a homemade cannon was used to accomplish this taiL (ed NOTE Merrill teaches social studies at Lower Cape May Regional High School and has lived in the county since I97S.
