Landfill Closure Funding Pushed

SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is seeking support from other counties throughout New Jersey in an effort to increase *state funding assistance for the proper closure of existing landfills. "This problem of inadequately closed landfills and dumps leaching contaminants into our groundwaters." said MUA Chairman William F.X. Band, "may ultimately become as severe a threat to our health and welfare, and to the state's vital groundwater resources, as toxic waste dumps." GOV. THOMAS H. Kean recently conditionally vetoed a bill appropriating $30 million for landfill closures, cutting the total figure down to $8 million. "Unfortunately, even the original appropriation of $30 million in this bill does not reflect the type of state commitment that is needed. considering the magnitude of the task." Band said. "The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has recently estimated that local governments and private landfill owners statewide may have to spend over $300 million in the years just ahead to meet state-mandated landfill closure requirements."
