Joyride III jflk ByJJbby Demp Forrest \J 1 I was born a geek. While it's an enigma to No. 2 how such a cool cat can be borne of a geek mother, it happens that's the way I am. Sometimes it seems it is I who is going through the awkward age and bringing shame to my house. While I'm not certain what it is that a geek does or doesn't do. I seem to manage being one very well. •Mom. don't let anyone see you with your collar out like that." No. 2 said to me the other day. "Huh?" I said. "It makes you look like a geek," said No. 2 I WENT TO THE MIRROR and studied myself I stuck my collar inside my sweater. ' "Now how do I look?" I asked NO. 2. "Better." said No. 2. "That's all?" I asked. "Just 'better'?" "What can I say, Mom," said No. 2. "You're a geek." "But I put my collar inside my sweater." I said defensively. No. 2 looked me up and down, and sighed. "SOMETIMES I wonder how it was I got you for a mother," said No. 2 shrugging his shoulders. "Vice versa," I said, shrugging my shoulders, thinking maybe that might make me look cool. No. 2 wasn't impressed. "There was a time." I said, "when you wouldn't have cared if I was a geek or not." No. 2 showed no remorse. He shrugged his shoulders again. I shrugged back. "I guess I was just born a geek." I said, hoping for sympathy. No. 2 gave me none "DO YOU TIIINK it's too late for me to get out of geekdom?" I asked. "I wouldn't even know where to begin with you," said No 2. "Maybe I could try a little," I said hesitantly. "Start wearing my collars in. you know make little changes like that at first, then work up gradually;4' No. 2 looked me up and down again "1 think you're kind of hopeless. Mom.'' No 2 said.

Pernicious anemia and folic acid deficiency today i are our topics of discussion in our series on blood. Pernicious anemia is the term for a low blood count caused by B12 deficiency. This is a particularly serious form of anemia because B12 is vital to the maintenance of a healthy nervous sytem, as well as the production of red blood cells. Prolonged pernicious anemia can lead to irreversible brain damage and spinal cord damage. This serves to underscore the need to pursue the causes of a low blood count and not assume taking iron supplements will do the trick. THE AMERICAN diet is now filled with extensive vitamin supplements. Accordingly. it is extremely rare for someone to develop pernicious anemia strictly from lack of intake of Bl2. However, it is possible for the body to lose or reduce its ability to absorb B12. This is what would com monly lead to Bl2-induced anemia. The nutrients we eat are absorbed in different parts of the digestive tract. B12 is absorbed in the lower intestine by com-
1 bination with a substance called "intrinsic factor" i which is secreted by the stomach lining. FOR REASONS not yet discovered some people stop secreting the intrinsic factor and thus cannot make use of the B12 from their diet. This can also occur as a result of certain forms of digestive surgery Pernicious anemia is more frequent in those who have relatives with the disorder. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have a close relative with it. This form of anemia is rare before age 40 and occurs equally in men and women. IT IS FOUND on occasion in pregnant women because of their increased need for vitamins for the baby. This is one reason mothers-to-be should lake their maternity vitamins without fail. We also check for pernicious anemia in alcoholics. Alcoholics tend to eat fewer nutrients because they are satisfied by the calories in the liquor. Folic acid also is extremely important to the production of red blood cells. Unlike as with most vitamins, your body does not have a long term ability to maintain reserves of folic acid.
IT TAKES only a few weeks to develop a deficiency if your diet has been too low in green vegetables. There is a rare disease called "celiac" that restricts the body's ability to absorb folic acid, and some pecple do have an increased need for this vitamin. These deficiencies can lead to all the usual symptoms of anemia: paleness, fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations In the particular case of these two vitamins, deficiency can be signalled by a sore mouth anfl tongue and a yellow color to the * skin. IF THE BI2 deficiency is severe, your balance may be affected, you may have some memory loss, depression. confusion and continuous tingling in your hands. Since the effect of pernicious anemia can be permanent, any of these symptoms should send you dashing to the doctor for evaluation.
