Backers in Accord On Cape Projects
COLD SPRING - Plans for a museum at Historic Cold Spring Village and a projectto build a Fishermen^s Memorial and Nautical Museum are compatible and will not work against each other, according to representatives of the two projects who met recently at the village. Freeholder Herbert C. Frederick, under whom the museum will be operated at Historic Cold Spring Village, and Jeff Reichle, Fishermen's Memorial
Inc., secretary, said following the meeting that the two groups can and will work in harmony to achieve the goals set by both entities. THE COLD SPRING Village museum is being funded in part by a $250,000 grant from the state. Once that museum is established, it will be funded as part of the village complex. The Fishermen's Memorial and museum which ultimately would be constructed at Cape May would be sup-
ported by an assortment of fund-raising efforts and donations. In the case of the Historic Cold Spring Village museum, Frederick pointed out that while the displays of nautical, recreational fishing, and other water-based artifacts would create a museum atmosphere, the size of the facility and its location would preclude any waterbased displays. These could be housed in other areas where there is water access. REPRESENTATIVES of the Fishermen's Memorial, Inc., said their first priority was to complete the memorial and erect a small chapei on the site donated to them by the City of Cape May. The long range goal of the memorial group is to construct a museum nearby. Since the terms of the state funding to the county project call for a completion of the work within one year of the date of acknowledgment that the funds were available it is probable thg^the Cold Spring Village facility will be open in 1986. The former Lower Township Hall is being moved from its present location on Old Shore Road to a site on the east end of the village, near Route 9. It is contemplated that several small buildings will also be acquired and moved onto the site to house smaller exhibits which will tie into the museum. THE REPRESENTATIVES of the two groups discussed ways they could work together toward a common goal. Special
events at the village could help promote the memorial project. It was also recognized that once tourists were aware that there were many historic attractions which could be visited in Cape May County, of which the Fishermen's Memorial and Historic Cold Spring Village were but two. the tourist-visitors would be more inclined to visit for more than one day and to return more often. Attending the meeting representing the Fishermen's Memorial, Inc., were Jeff Reichle, Richard Baer and Wayne Halbruner. In addition to Freeholder Frederick, the county was represented by Joseph Montemurro, director of Cold Spring Village, and Lou Rodia, director of the Department of Public Affairs. Stuart Tweed, Cape May County Extension Service Marine Agent, was also present.
