SPORTS by SUE McKinley Ocean City's Swim Team " « Has Two of CAL's Best
I've recently been tossed into a pool of facts in which I have no choice but to tread water ! I've been informed that cave drawings made in the Libyan desert show people swimming, that swimming ranks as one of man's oldest sports; that an Egyptian nobleman who lived about 2160 B.C. recorded that his children took swimming lessons ; and that Ocean City High School has had a swim team for more than 40 years. I've also been informed that the Ocean City swimmers are offended by the absence of my ink. J am flattered that one might feel complimented by an appearance in my column. | therefore it is my pleasure to announce the success of the Ocean City team. BEING THE ONLY swim team in the county does seem to detract from the social interest, but maybe it is my job to fix that. The 5-9 Raiders display two of the best swimmers in the Cape Atlantic League. Robbie Astle has not been beaten in the butterfly this year and sophomore Mary Garrett is racking up the wins in the 200 and 400 meter races. • As a matter of fact. Garrett set a new school record for the 400 meter freestyle last Wednesday. Garrett propelled for 400 meters in 4:49.8. breaking the mark for the third time this season. SETTING THE RECORD made the 91-80 victory over Holy Sprit that much sweeter for her. Astle took the 100 meter butterfly as well. Last Monday the Raider water peddlers won seven of 11 events for a 108-63 nonconference take from Willingboro I'll keep my head above water so I don't miss any more of the aquatic action ; and caps off to the swimmers' NOW THAT I'VE ac quired some sort of guilt complex for not covering ALL Cape May County sports. I may as well spend some words before another season ends without notice I've played a lot of basketball. but I've never wrestled i competitively ' , so I'll do my best to strike up an interest in the sport. I do enjoy watching a good wrestling match now and then, but I have to leave time in between for my nails to grow back. The county definitely has some mean mat men. beginning with 17-0 Erik Simonsen from Lower Cape May. Leading Middle Township with wins is Steve Jones with 12 wins and a single loss. WILDWOOD'S BEST RECORD is owned by Pete Meyer with seven wins and four losses. Wildwood Catholic's Steve Brad is near the top with 12 wins and one loss. Last week Ocean City fell to Oakrest 33-15, while Lower Cape May rolled over Mainland 64-6. Simonsen improved his
record to 17-0 at 188 pounds with a pin. Dennis Cluff < 144 pounds > and Kevin Coombs (101 pounds) pinned two more for the winners. PLAY BY PLAY wrestling coverage is not extremely exciting in black and white, so don't think I've forgotten that. If there are. by any chance, any other teams that compete in sports such as chess, polo, or spelling bees, just inform me of your existence and I'll be delighted to introduce you to the literate public. I was going to end on that note but now that everyone is used to finding out about the week in basketball. I couldn't let you down. WILDWOOD CATHOLIC boys won by the skin of the teeth as they toppled Wildwood by a basket. It was 46-32 Catholic when the Crusaders were almost taken by the element of surprise; Wildwood exploded for a 15-6 fourth quarter spurt Warrior Steve Severio netted one from where the lines meet and Torey Harris pulled off a three point play to cut the margin to 44-42 with 2:35 remaining. Joe Bada. who scored 16 points, hit a pair of free throws and Catholic was up by four. Severio cut it to two but Catholic held the ball until I Wildwood was forced to foul. Crusader Alex Mairone. who averages 17 points a game, was held to eight Severio paced Wildwood with 12 MIDDLE TOWNSHIP was propelled by Maurice Hubbard's 20 points to beat Absegami 78-45. Dion Coley and Mike Watkins popped 15 and 12. respectively. for the winners. Gary Melton connected for 22 for the Braves. Lower Cape May downed Pleasantville 81-63. putting four Capers in double figures. Joe Mendo led with 18. Kevin Moore added 15. Ken York netted 14 and Ed Leo accounted for 11 Toney Copes defended the Greyhounds with 16 counters AT THE GIRLS' END of the court. Wildwood Cathoi lie was the victim of a painful two points Catholic led the contest for 31 minutes and 59 seconds It was a Nicole Gambino buzzer beater with a second to tick that gave Wildwood a 26-24 decision over Catholic. Ann Turner led the Warriors with 12 and Franni Barcas donated nine to the winning cause. The Crusaders were fuelded by Kate 1 Caruso with 12 nets and Nicole Helversen with seven rebounds.
Middle Township downed Absegami 41-25 after an Absegami first quarter freeze. THE BRAVES HELD the ball for the first eight minutes, then Middle went to work. Bev Grant and Kara McVey exploded for 10 points in the second half while Betsy Gilbert deposited 10 for the afternoon. Gilbert. Middle's chairman of the boards, hauled down 14. Ocean City's Judy Ecker-
son hit a career high 25 points and swept 15 boards to push the Raiders past Oakcrest 62-43. Vicki Miller and Pam MacFarland added 15 and 10, respectively, for the winner. LOWER CAPE MAY girls fought back from a 10-2 first quarter deficit but fell 29-22 to Pleasantville. Trina Station hit for 10 counters and Lavonne Rice netted nine for the Greyhounds. I think that covers everything!
| New League? CAPE MAY - The city is i considering starting a '• 35-year-and-older softball league beginning in the sprI ing. Those interested in organizing a team are asked to call the Department of Civic Affairs. 884-8411. i ext. 20 or 2T.
