Rising Sea, Sinking Land Doom Islands
AVALON - The coast is sinking about eight inches a century. Sea level is rising from one to three feet a century and "will accelerate." "Sooner or later the barrier island has to retreat." And "this is reality." Yvonne E. Ballenger told the local Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night. Ballenger. chairman of the borough's environmental commission since 1976. warned that the local government and citizens "just don't pay any attention" to the problem. Brother Thwarts Attack, Beats Alleged Assailant
CAPE MAY - A Cape May woman who was attacked and tied up by a burglar was rescued by her brother last week who then engaged in a blood battle with the intruder before subduing him. Arrested in the incident was Michael P. McCullough, 28, a Middle Townhip handyman. McCullough of Stone Harbor Manor, was held in $35,000 cash bail by Municipal Court Judge P. Martin Way. Charges against McCullough include second degree burglary with intent to commit bodily harm, barglary, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, possession of marijuana, illegal possession of ) weapons for unlawful purr poses, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted aggravated sexual assault. ! "As he called her name, the burglar came out of the apartment with a knife and attacked him." said Sheehan. "The brother fought and subdued McCullough. and neighbors called the police." The victim. 32. whose legs had been tied by McCullough. managed to free herself during the fight, and ran to the rectory of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church seeking help. "He was pretty well subdued when I arrived." said Sheehan. who answered the call for help that was received at 7:18 p.m.. on Feb. 18. "I just handcuffed him." McCullough was taken to Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital after being arrested and discharged Feb. 22.
