Girl, 12 Envisions Own Karate School

STEELMANTON - Picture a class of martial arts students lined up in their white GI's before starting their warm-up exercises. Picture the black-clad proprietor of the school and instructor. A venerable black belt master Karate, right? Not as Shelly Meister, 12, of Steelmanton, envisions it. The proprietor is a slightly older Shelly, after she has won the black belt which she is nearing. SHELLY. THE daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Meister, now holds a brown belt, one step away from the coveted Mack. holds a fourth degree black j belt in Gojo Ryo style Karate. Against her parents' wishes, Shelly began her studies in the martial arts three years ago. She started taking instruction from Tim Davis in Tae- | Kwon-Do Karate. She had i worked her way up to blue belt when Davis moved to Texas. SHELLY STARTED all 1 over again in the style of GoJo Ryo, eventually winding up with Dr. Joseph Artesi, former trainer and mentor of three P.K.A. world champions. Artesi, of Court House, is also founder of the New Jersey Black Belt Association. The Meisters have long since dropped their opposition to Shelly's training. Her brother. T.J., 5. will begin martial arts training next year. THEY ARE also proud of Shelly's tournament record and the array of trophies she has amassed. A student at the Upper Township Middle School. Shelly is also active in basketball and softball. In addition to owning her own school, Shelly would like to become a "world class athlete" Who's to say she won't realize both ambitions?
