As if it wasn't lough enough to get students to read these days Public Broadcasting has now made it more difficult. With the release of their new Adventures of Huckleberry Finn there will emerge a new legion of watchers who will be ready to believe that words hdve "come alive on the screen" Don't believe it for a minute. What PBS has produced is a good movie about a boy's adventures with a runaway slave on a raft drifting down the Mississippi. Mark Twain was not a screenwriter, he was a great American novelist, and if he saw this slick "adaptation" he would most assuredly "light out for the territory". WHAT IS MOST disturb ing about this current cinematic attempt to supplant literature is that it is much better than any of its predecessors, and it will probably end up in the video-tape inventories of hundreds of high schools and be viewed by thousands of students on home VCRs prior to their annual Huck Finn test. It is a long film that is presented in three parts and the performances are good, the river is beautiful, the costumes are authentic. but it is a sad misrepresentation of the real thing. THIS GREAT novel (for some THE great American novel) is words describing an epic journey of youth filtered through the mind of an aging satirist. It is the imagery that only words can convey... "so we would take some fish off of the lines and cook up a hot breakfast. And afterwards we would watch the lonesomeness of the river and kind of lazy along..." How can you translate that
idyllic life on a screen STEVEN SPIELBERG is one of our current film moralists, and his craft is considerable He makes excellent films, but they are what they are — movies. They are two-hour celluloid adventures and they have their own special imagery A great novel is like a bottomless well that you can return to often for sustenance and the ability of the written word to move us so deeply. But. since reading takes more time and is infinitely less explicit than film there is the very real danger that many young people will substitute one for the other. READING IS more dit ficult. and unless we as educators can sell our students on the greater rewards to be found in literature, we face future generations of viewers who do not know what they have missed Seeing part of the PBS production. I returned to Huckleberry Finn to find all those wonderful parts still intact in the pages of my dog-eared edition. Huck is still that manchild contradiction of ignorance and wisdom, and he and Jim and the raft and the river blend into a very special journey toward freedom. IT IS INTERESTING to note that the film was not released until Halley's Comet was on its way back into the firmament. Sam Clemens would probably have been visibly upset with what had happened to his novel which had been "adopted and sivilized". He probably would not have recognized it. nor would most people who have read and loved the novel. Hopefully, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn will survive even a good PBS treatment. ' «
