Crants Require Public Ownership, Operation

ERMA - The local fishing industry could not have applied for federal and state grants to build and operate a cold storage plant, according to county Economic Development Director Walter S. Sachs Jr. But it could have tried for lowinterest loans. Sachs asked that that clarification be made after this newspaper last week reported that the county hopes to build and run the plant because the industry was "unable to agree on doing the job itself."

Sachs said that, once the county decided to seek funds, the fishing industry 's inability to agree was on the best location. The countyhas decided on the airport industry industrial park "Grants require public ownership and operation." said Sachs, who agreed that low-interest loans would have been a vehicle for the industry to do the job itself. Sachs said the county, like the state and federal government. "wants to create economic growth and sup- ' port industries and areas with high unemployment."
