Two County Teams Vying i y For South Jersey Titles
The race for the South Jersey basketball title is well underway as we enter the semifinals with two Cape May County teams still in the race The lady Panthers of Middle Township met Ocean City last week and downed the Raiders in the first step toward the Group II title. Bev Grant led the Panthers with 19 points for the 35-31 clincher. Grant made seven of her connections in tjje fourth quarter. The senior guard also donated five steals and seven assists to the cause Kara McVey hit a pair of free throws in the closing minutes to give Middle a ticket to game two. BETSY GILBERT gathered 10 rebounds to break the school record with over 300 boards this .season Michelle Greenwaldt picked off five steals and Ronnie Lynn was Middle's defensive savior, holding Judy Eckerson to minimal points in the final stanze. A blocked shot by Cori Osborne and two nets on the foul stripe by Tracey Greenwaldt were crucial plays in the win. Earler in the week. Ocean City beat Woodrow Wilson in the first round. JL'DY ECKKRSON S 22 points led the 45*44 decision. The Raiders were also carried by Mary Farrell. who deposited eight points, snagged rebounds and collected five assists. Wildwood girls were vying for the Group I title. The lady Warriors downed Clayton 71-42 as Ann Turner netted 22 and hauled eight boards. A 38-18 halftime lead overwhelmed Clayton. Frani Barcas donated 11 points. Nicole Gambino pulled seven boards and Sharon Sittinere picked off four steals for secondranked Wildwood.

Wildwood Catholic girls, who were rated seventh, fell to St Peter 49-38 in Parochial B tournament play. Kate Caruso made a 22 point effort for the Crusaders. Aly'ssa Degnan led the winners with 22 and Lori Ruffus hit for 10. IN BOY'S ACTION the Middle Township Panthers and the Wildwood Catholic Crusaders ended their season last week. Wildwood Catholic lost to Gloucester Catholic 55-52 in a Parochial B tilt. Gloucester was paced by an eight for eight performance on the foul line by Bill Green, who also deposited eight points. Jerry Sampson led the winners with 16 points, while Joe Bada led the third-rated Crusaders with 16 counters and six boards Sandpiper, Middle Vie For Crown CAPE MAY — Sandpiper Monogramming Inc. and Middle Township/ Westside Market both advanced to the championship game in Cape May Women's Power Volleyball League. Sandpiper defeated Washington .Street Gallery 15-12. 15-8 and 15-12 behind the spiking of Sharon Mericle and Merc Bauman plus the setting of Sheri Hickok and Pat Komar. Middle Township/Westside Market defeated Jackson Mountain Cafe in three tight contests. 15-11. 15-13 and 15-12. Middle Township was led by the Jan Seer and Robin Gilbert, with Peg Arnold and Gwyn Williams.
