With all the hand-wring-ing and deep sighing over the demise of the Broadway theater season, take heart in the fact that you can see a great show with wonderful music without having to travel to New York or spend $45 for an orchestra seat. West Side Story comes alive again on our stage this weekend. The production will not be done off Schubert Alley, and it will not be mounted in a legitimate theater. It will be performed in a high school auditorium with all the energy and enthusiasm that 90 student actors, singers, dancers, musicians and technicians can generate. With Leonard Bernstein's music and William Shakespeare's "original" book, that adds up to a wonderful evening of theater that will more than make up for any deficiencies in the current "season" VOL' CAN HAVE the opportunity to see and hear the modern version of the tragedy of the "star-crossed lovers" at a bargain price What you will see will be the culmination of hundreds of hours of planning and 10 weeks of intensified practice to bring forth the polished production. audiences it will be as close as they will come to a Broadway production now that travel expenses, ticket prices and the dearth of new and exciting shows have made the Great White Way totally inaccessible to so many of us. But if we can see a-perfor-mance with the flair of our West Side Story, at least temporarily, who cares? UNDER THE direction of Paul Mathis. with the assistance of musical director Edward Jurewicz, vocal director Sandra Reane. choreographer siina Heminway. costume designer Lynn Massimiano and set designer John Engler. this high school presents a truly wonderful evening's entertainment. The students who perform will touch you with as much feeling as you may have gotten from Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence in 1957 orRichard Beymer and Natalie Wood in 1961 — do you remember?
THIS PARTICULAR musical has always been special and its power to return audiences to see it performed has never diminished. As a learning experience it is difficult to imagine a better vehicle. Our students read it as Romeo and Juliet, they read it as West Side Story They learn to live the lives of gang members in the East Bronx and express the litany of frustration, rage and misunderstanding that can produce senseless tragedy. THE FACT that this modern passion play is set to some of the most stirring music ever to come from the Broadway stage makes the moral of the tale so much more palatable. Treat yourself again loan evening with the Jets and the Sharks, Krupke. Shrank. Maria and Tony. Surround yourself with music and lyrics of "Tonight" and "Somewhere", and feel fulfilled from having spent a worthwhile evening at the theater that remains alive and well at LCMR.
