Home Landscaping With Native Plants

Remember that plush field of wild flowering plants you noticed as you drove home yesterday? Well, it isn't as difficult as you might think to recreate a similar landscape at home While local nurseries and wholesale plant growers usually have just a limited number of native species available, consumer demand for these plants is at an all time high SO. MORK AM) more homeowners are taking matters into their own hands by "venturing into the wild" to get the native plants they want. Two ways that you can secure samplings of wild plants and flowers indigenous to your area is to collect wild seeds and make cuttings. THE FIRST TIIINC; you must do. whether you are collecting seeds or making cuttiflgs/is to decide which native plants and flowers you want in your garden. If you are unfamiliar with the plants from your area, a good reference book with pictures will help. Once you have identified these, you should do the following: I. STl'DY THE flower or plant you are interested in while it is in bloom It is easier to identify each species at this time 2 Place a stake next to each plant from which you will be collecting seeds. Cut the top end square and the bottom end at a slant This will help identify which end to plant once you bring it home 3. BE SURE TO select cuttings from last season's growth 4 Remember to check with local authorities if you plant to make cuttings in national parks or forests — you may need a permit
