BELOW ARE some sim pie techniques for preserving the life and look of your indoor surfaces The luster and beauty of your wood furniture is testimony to the skill of the finisher. This craftsman rubs on over 10 layers of finishes by hand to enhance the wood grain and highlight the natural color of the furniture. These coatings also dou ble as a protective shield against spilled food and hot dishes which can damage the original condition of the wood. TO PROTECT a finish from wea^and tear, wax (not more than once or twice a month ) with waxes specially formulated for use on furniture. Different finishes require different waxes and applications as follows: •High gloss finishes - Use a liquid polish or paste wax ; •Satin gloss — Use cleaning polish or cream wax i without silicone: ! -Low gloss — Use liquid
polish designed for lowluster wood or a cleaning wax to protect the finish without creating a shine; •OIL FINISH — Add a few drops of mineral spirits of lemon juice to a mild soap solution to wash the finish: •PAINTED FINISH - Don't use any wax. Wipe the finish with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid getting alcohol, petroleum products and nail polish remover on furniture. as it can remove the finish Most finishes are scratch resistant and can be wiped with a damp cloth for everyday cleaning. To remove rings from wet glasses, press the spot with a warm iron over a damp cloth for 30 seconds. The mark should disappear REFRIGERATORS, washers, dryers and other major appliances in your home are each covered with about a half gallon of paint. Yet this small amount, which represents about one percent of the total cost of the appliance, protects your home furnishings from damaging heat, moisture and grime that can lead to rust and corrosion. Appliance finishes are probably the easist to care for and require only a minimum of care. Remeber to: • AVOID ABRASIVE cleansers that will scratch the surface and dull the natural gloss of the finish. Most appliances need only ! a regular wiping to look* like new. •In extremely moist or salty areas, wax ap pi iances with an automotive wax for an extra layer of protection from the corrosive environment. Ljr •If scratches or nicks develop paint with a touchup kit available from the parts departments of major manufacturers.
