Time to Check Trees Tor Winter's Damage

COURT HOUSE - As the weather improves, early spring becomes a time to check your trees for damage caused by winter's storms. It is a time when fallen limbs from weak and neglected trees can give rude announcements of trouble, according to Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent. In the wake of winter storms, split branches are commonly seen on trees that are poorly formed and contain undesirable growth and dead wood. Trees may be susceptible to breakage because of nar row. weak branch crotches and poor form, often caused by inadequate/ or im^x proper pruning. (Proper, pruning on a regularjjasis will help trees develop strong, wide, angled crotand attain a structure that will resist damage from adverse weather FAST-CROWING trees, including poplar, willow and silver maple, characteristically produce branches that are weak and subject to breakage. More desirable trees such as oak. ash. linden and sycamore, are stronger. Trees that have multiple trunks, such as gray birch, and those with natural narrow branch crotches, such as Bradford Callery pear, are ofien the first to sueProtect, Decorate For Kids If you have a little Picasso in the family who uses the walls as a canvas, or a budding chef whose countertop is the carpet, it's time to "child-proof the room ! k There isn t a parent alive who doesn't know the frustration of trying to get crayon off the wall, fingerpain! from a desktop or cookies out of the rug WITHOUT STIFLING ~ the creativity and energy of little artists, you can help protect a child's room with today's easy-care materials. - • Use washable, nontoxic wall paints • Use plastic laminate furnishings rather than natural wood. • Carpets should be stain resistant and washable. Cotton rag rugs are washable and many wool rugs can be treated with a silicone-based spray. Most new soft synthetic rugs are mildew and water resistant. • DECORATE and help protect window shades, bulletin boards, room dividers, trunks, picture frames, unpainted furniture or old items from the attic with colorful coverings that wipe clean easily. Use the scraps from selfadhesive coverings to cover chair rails, window . trim, light switches and other areas frequented by little fingers to minimize cleaning chores.

cumb to the combination of a heavy ice coating and forceful winds. Corrective pruning, especially when these trees are young, will prevent severe damage WHEN FACED with a storm-injured tree, take action as soon as conditions are safe and the weather permits. Damaged branches should be removed back to the next main branch or trunk Loose bark should be removed and wounds scribed with a sharp knife or chisel to produce a clean, smooth edge where new bark tissue will form. Trees that break up severely or develop serious trunk splits may best be \ removed, especially if they pj^S^nt hazards or have little landscape value. Valuable trees can be repaired and strengthened using a technique called cabling and bracing by a professional arborist. who has the necessary equipment and experience.

Usually, a combination of pruning and cabling or bracing is done in order to obtain the best results EVERGREEN trees may become heavily laden with snow and ice and are - often more susceptible to damage than deciduous trees If branches are not broken, it's best to let the snow and ice melt so the evergreens regain their shape naturallly An attempt to restore bent branches while they are stillf frozen may cause them to break. If an entire tree is leaning, it can be gently, pulled upright after the spring thaw and supported by stakes or guy wires. Accepted maintenance practices of pruning, fertilizing, damage repair and pest control applied routinely offer the best way to preserve tree health and strength, reduce severity of storm damage, and pro tect the landscape value of trees
