Stenciling Walls For Dream Room

For the price of a pre-cut stencil, a couple of bushes and two or three jars of paint, you can transform an ordinary room into the room of your dreams. Gone are the days when wall stenciling demanded the skill and expertise of a professional artisan. Modern-day materials not only enable you to handstencil an average room in a day or two, but allow you to do so inexpensively. • WAI.I.S SHOULD be free of dirt and grease and painted with two coats of flat paint. Either a latex or oil base is acceptable as long as it is not glossy • Save a little background paint in case you need to touch up. • A lighter color background paint will offer better stenciling results than a dark background. • You might also stencil over a textured surface or either plaster or wallpaper If s t enc i 1 i ng over wallpaper, make certain it is tight on the wall. The proper sequence for stenciling is: l Ceiling border or frieze; 2. Baseboard border; 3. Allover designs. • Stencil section ofathe design on paper and tape it to the wall to view border placement first. • Establish a true horizontal line to assure that your stenciled design will be accurate. If a true ceiling line exists. simply measure down from the ceiling a sufficient distance, marking lightly with a pencil at several points. Try Seaweed For Mulching For the gardener looking to lighten his or her work load, a mulch of seaweed is nothing less than a miracle. Believe it or not. that slimy seaweed we all try desperately to avoid at the beach is a great mulch. It contains an excellent source of minerals and nutrients which benefit both the plants and the soil. • DETERMINE IIOW many times the pattern will repeat on each wall from corner to corner. j Keep in mind each wall may vary. • Adjust spacing between repeat designs in order to come out even at the corners. For a baseboard border, you may repeat the frieze or select a different border The measure for allover designs • Stencil several of the design on paper • Tape these " paper proofs" to the wall, eyeballing the spacing. • Measure spacing between designs and adjust. • Lightly mark a guideline for each design.
