Taking Trail Of ' Green Tides'

SWAINTON - The N.J. Department of Environmental Protection has announced that it will conduct an intensive survey in Ocean City this summer in an effort to determine the cause or causes of algae blooms that plagued that resort during the past two seasons. Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority Chairman William F.X. Band had petitioned both the NJDEP and the U.S. Envil ronmental Protection Agen- * cy to conduct a study of the causes of algae blooms, commonly called green ' tides, and had also asked state and federal legislators to support such a study. ON FEB. 25. the USEPA set up a meeting with the NJDEP. the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and 'other technical people familiar with algae blooms to develop a monitoring, strategy for this summer and a possible research agenda to define the causes of green tide." according to a letter from Christopher Daggett, Region II administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Daggett was responding to a letter from U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who had written the USEPA to ask for a study of algae blooms after being told of the lack of definitive information on the phenomenon by Band X IN FACT, it was reported at the meeting that there has been considerable interest in further study of green tides since Band sent his letter to all N.J. congressional and state legislators Larry Schmidt, director of the NJDEP commissioner's planning group, said the NJDEP will deter mine the nutrient load at the discharge point of the Ocean City Region wastewater treatment plant and compare it with similar analyses made in Cape May County inlets. ACCORDING TO a spokesman for the USEPA following the Feb. 25 meeting. NOAA agreed to conduct pure cultural algal assay work to determine limiting growth factors in algae blooms. The USEPA. the spokesman said, will conduct near shore water sampling along the New Jersey coast this summer and provide addi-

tional samples for NJDEP analysis. Daggett reported in his letter to Lautenberg that the green tides that occurred

along the southern New Jersey coastline "are not unique to this region but occur in many coastal waters of the United States."
