Bear Swamp East . Hearing Slated

I TRENT** - The f Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Parks and Forestry has proposed the Uatlition of a 1,500-acre tract called Bear Swamp East in Downe Township (Cumberland County) to the Natural Areas System. The proposal will be the subject of a public hearing to be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in Dennis Township at the East Creek Lodge on East Creek Road. Bear Swamp East is an area known to contain New Jersey's only nesting of the state's most mature swamp hardwood forests. ^ THE AREA IS bordered on the west by Route 555 and on the east by the boundary between Downe and Commercial townships. Inclusion of the site in the Natural Areas System will ensure preservation of the existing habitat through

development of a management plan. Natural Areas are lands or water that are owned by the DEP and which are set aside for preservation of natural diversity. THE SYSTEM currently consists of 41 such areas totaling over 22,000 acres, most of which are located in state parks and wildlife management areas. Development or habitat alteration is prohibited unless authorized by a management plan for protecting a rare species or community. New Jersey has the oldest and one of the largest state-owned Natural Areas Systems in the nation. The purpose of the public hearing is to solicit comment on the proposed addition to the system, including the management objectives. ACCORDING TO the Divisions of Parks and Forestry, a management plan will be developed over the next year prescribing the practices which would ' be acceptable within the site. That plan will be based on the proposed management objectives: to preserve ecological communities and relationships and ensure preservation of the bald eagle nesting site and other known and potentially endangered species habitats. The public hearing was postponed from February because of inclement weather. Those willing to .comment may appear at the hearing or submit written comments by April 1 to Howard Geduldig, DEP Office of Regulatory Services, CN 402, Trenton, NJ 08625. Trash Pickup March 31 VILLAS - The Lower Township Roads Department has announced there will be no trash pickups this Friday due to the Easter holiday.
