Greenpeace Joins Ocean Burn Battle
WILD WOOD CREST - Mayor Frank McCall is opposed to the EPA proposal to allow Chemical Waste Management Inc. of Oak Brook, Illinois a 19-day test incineration of toxic waste 150 miles off the coast of Wildwood Crest and Cape May, New Jersey. The proposal by the EPA which supposedly insures
the program of toxic burning as being a failsafe program cannot be guaranteed, he said. McCall, at a recent public hearing before the EPA. presented "Puss N Boots", "Henny Penny", "Snow White and the Red Rose". "The Three Wishes", and "Cinderella" to illustrate the EPA proposal as being a fairy tale. THE ILLUSTRATIONS - all have happy endings, he said, but the only happy ending to the EPA's fairy tale would be if Chemical Waste Management would be denied the permit and not be allowed to burn off Wildwood Crest and Cape May. In a recent letter to Peter Dykstra of Greenpeace in Washington. D.C., McCall stated that he has always been of the frame of mind to work with the system to accomplish goals for the benefit of his community, his county, his state and his country. One of the reasons the American way of life is the envy of the world, he declared, is that the system works, most of the time. When it becomes obvious that the system is not going | to work and the wishes of i the majority of the people | are not being met, measures which do not fall within the < guidelines of protocol may i possibly be necessary. ■,
McCALL AI-SO stated, "If memory serves me correctly, our country was founded by a groUp of men and women who were being dictated to and who were tired of being ignored by those in authority. It is also my recollection that they also worked within the system until the bubble of protocol burst." McCall stated he believes Greenpeace wants to do what is right and that he firmly believes that Greenpeace is committed to working within the system to accomplish the goals McCALL ASKED for the cooperation of Greenpeace, if all else fails, to bring the Greenpeace ship to Delaware Bay to assist in blocking the route of the Chemical Waste Management ship to its destination. McCall feels many boaters, fishermen and other interested parties would assist in blocking Delaware Bay from Cape May to Cape Henlopen to show displeasure with the waste burning project. McCALL HAS commitments from over 250 boat owners to date to join if the matter goes to the extent of allowing the burn. "It is my hope and my that all could be resolved within the system and that our environment I
1, and our shores could be r- spared from what appears s to be the inevitable unhappy n ending to one of the greatest g fairy tales ever- written," e McCall said, y McCall will attend press o conferences in Washington, y D C. in late April and eai^y e May which are being f scheduled by Greenpeace to share with Patrick Tobin, s hearing officer of EPA. and » Larry Jensen, assistant ade? ministrator of water quality t of the EPA, the sentiments 0 of the people. 1 Greenpeace spokespersons Peter Dykstra and ? David Rapaport have acknowledged the request of ? Mayor McCall and will make every effort to bring one of the Greenpeace ships i to Delaware Bay to support McCall's effort to prevent the off-shore burning proposal. r .
