SPORTS by SUE McKinley The Season's Over, But Not for Grant

Basketball season is over, but Middle Township's Bev Grant is still attending practice. Grant was chosen to play in the North - South Jersey All Star game tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Rutgers University. Next week she practices for the Courier Post All Star game on March 28 at Pennsauken High School. She was also named to the first team Cape Atlantic League. Grant was a star that nobody saw coming, not even Middle Township coach Gary Barber. "She came out as a freshman and was terrible. She made the team because we don't cut freshman. I'm gald we had the progam then because it was the start of a godd thing for Bev," he said. GRANT WANDERED into the gym four years ago and spent the basketball season, as she describe it, "filling water bottles." A year later, after a summer of individual practice, she found herself on the Junior Varsity team and fell into the mediocre category by season's end. Her junior year she was a J.V starter and a little more than mediocre, but the varsity squad was stocked with talent and Grant had to wait her turn. This year her number came up and she was finally given 32 minutes to show the Cape Atlantic League (CAL) what she's been working on since the day she laced up her first pair of Nikes. / Girls Softball CAPE MAY r- There are still some opening for girl softball players on the Greater Cape May Little League. Players must be aged 9 through 12 by Aug. 1 . Call Margie Delias, 884-4895 or 884-3488.

GRANT LIT UP the scoreboards for 547 points, dished out over 100 assists and collected 110 steals. She lead Middle Township to a CAL title and a ticket to the South Jersey final. The summer of her junior years, Grant realized that if she wanted to be good there wouldn't be any vacation from basketball "I ate, drank and slept basketball last summer. I started playing because 1 wanted to make friends. Little did I know they'd become my family." Grant said. It will not be easy for Grant to leave her "family" behind, but she has more goals to accomplish on the college courts. 1MMACULATA, Trenton State. Stockton State. Montclair and St. John's have all expressed interest in Grant, but the all star has yet to make a commitment. "So far I was impressed mostly with Montclair. The coach made me feel at ease and assured me that I was right for their program." she said. It's been a long season but Grant remembers how it began. "The first game of the season they announced the starting lineup and it was the first time I was ever in it. When they announced my name I ran onto the court and said to myself "I made it," she iiid. "Now I've got to start all over again in college." said Grant with a smile. WILD WOOD HIGH SCHOOL'S Lady Warriors have finally been stopped in their path toward the state title. After capturing the South Jersey crown, the Warriors faced H.G. Hoffman for the semifinal clash in the tournament. H.G. Hoffman pressed and ran for a 71-38 romp over Wildwood.
