HMO Care Coming I For Cape Seniors
MILLVILLEJ*i State Sen. James R. Hurley said last month that senior citizens in Cumberlang>and Cape May counties seeking a health maintenance orgaftdzation with Medicare support may join Omnicare sometime in the
middle of this month. Hurley. R-Cumberland. I Cape May, investigated I HMO services for senior I citizens following several I inquiries from constituents I who found they couldn't I join U.S. Healthcare I Systems Inc., operators of I the Medicare plans for I HMO PA/NJ. "THESE constituents I contacted my office after I responding to full-page I advertisements in local I newspapers for HMO I PA/NJ." Hurley said, "on- I ly to find out that these I plans weren't accepting ap- I plicants in Cape May, I Cumberland or Atlantic I counties." Hurley contacted U.S. I Healthcare Systems of- I ficials who subsequently ' agreed to withdraw the advertisements from publications in the threecounty area. The advertisements had apparently been submitted through a multi-newspaper package plan which included _ markets not covered by HMO PA/NJ. • THE U.S. Healthcare Systems package includes the full range of HMO services for senior citizens on Medicare." Hurley said. "This package can be offered for a nominal fee because the program is underwritten by the Health Care Financing Agency, which oversees the delivery of Medicare services." Omincare will have a HCFA contract soon and be able to offer the same program^ mid-April, according to an Omnicare marketing official. ANOTHER HMO organization is also expected to offer these services to Medicare patients sometime later this summer. Hurley said. When the program's I HCFA contract becomes | effective. Medicare reciI pients will be eligible for I the full range of HMO M benefits for a flat fee of $13 per month, he declared

Parkway Switch Backed by Hurley
TRENTON - Senator James R. Hurley. R-Cape May. Cumberland, last week endorsed legislation that would require the New Jersey Highway Authority to maintain a section of the Garden State Parkway in Cape May County, saying. "This transfer of responsibility should speed up improvements to the intersection of Stone Harbor Boulevard and the Parkway." "The section of road in question is a simple crossroad with a traffic light." Hurley said. "It is located in the center of an area that is undergoing rapid development Traffic is much heavier now than when the Parkway was built. Construction of an overpass is necessary to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety." THE DEPARTMENT of Transportation, which is now responsible for the roadway, is negotiating with the New Jersey HighwayAuthority to" transfer ownership. A bill sponsored by Sen. C Louis Bassano, R-Union, would quicken the negotiation process by requiring the New Jersey HighwayAuthority to assume the responsibility of maintaining four sections of the Parkway now owned by the state, including the four mile stretch in Cape May. Under the bill, these sections would remain toll-free. "Senator Bassano's bill came before the Senate Transportation and Communications Committee, of which I am a member."
Hurley said. '"Unfortunately. this legislation was not released from the committee. "FOR THE record. I want it known I support this bill I am convinced it is the only way to ensure that the upgrading of this intersection in Cape May County takes place." Senator Hurley explained that members of the New Jersey Highway Authority and Department of Transportation told the committee that transfer of ownership would cost about $180 million. "We have asked them to appear before our committee again next month to tell us in detail why it would cost $180 million. What will we get for that money'' We need answers from the DOT and NJHA and we need them now The longer we wait for their negotiations to be completed the longer it will take for the improvements to our roadways to take place." said Hurley. Garden Trip CAPE MAY - A bus trip to Longwood Gardens April 30 will be sponsored by the Cape May County Fishermen's Wives. All money must be received by April 15.
