Two pieces of research crossed my desk this week that were truly startling in combination. The first was the prod*** of an unpublished study commissioned by the Department of Education in Washington that concluded that "belief in the work ethic" contributed to greater success in school by "disadvantaged" youth. The second was a report for the Second International. Mathematics Study, a 20 nation survey that compared the performance of 8th- 12th graders around our globe This nation's 12th graders ranked 12th among 12 industrialized na tions (Japan was in first place). EIGHTH GRADE scores found the U.S. students trailing the Netherlands. France. Belgium. Hungary. Canada. ScoUand. England. Wales and Finland The first study seemed to explain the second. It was Martin Luther in the middle of the 16th Century who espoused the "ethic" that hard and good work is the key to salvation and success In America. Horatio Alger became a symbol of our national spirit and the most impor tant lesson of youth was: if you work hard anything is possible. WE WERE always the civiliation of determination and dedication. It was this country that led the world in technology and education. and then something happened. Somewhere along the line either we stopped growing or the rest of the world caught on to our secret of success and began to catch up What these two pieces of research demonstrate clearly is that: I) the old truths and principles still apply to success. 2) we have sold the rest of the world on our determination, and others have learned so well that they are out performing us 12.000 economically disadvantaged youth and mathematics scores of 6,700 students grades 8-12 do not prove anything. In this case, however, these two reports do support what, educators and philosophers and social crjjics have been saying for some time. Our national spirit is in a state of depression We are being out -performed because we have become smug and lazv We are spoiled by our search for the quick-fix. the easy solu tion. the instant cure. We are becoming a na tion of convenience and we have been tempted away from a national purpose by our scientific efforts to create a world resplendent with creature comforts IN OL'R STUDENTS that translates into easy boredom and the inability to concentrate for long periods of time. There is not enough "hard work" in there lives as there is the general lack of "hard work" in the lives of adults. This society faces enormous stress when we confront the fact that we feel unworthy when we are not * busy. So that we do not get physically fat. we run the roads and join health clubs We have to provide our
i own "hard work". The I same thing holds true in- j i tellectually. We must build 1 discipline into your youth. They must seek cognitive exercise the way they seek j the physical. The schools must push I them and the home must I reinforce the values of J study - academic work. I Without these efforts we 1 will probably continue our I slide into ease and I mediocrity or worse.
