Arbor Day To Salute Liberty COURT HOUSE - The theme of this year's Arbor . Day (Friday. April 25> will be "Plant a tree for Liberty " This theme has been adopted since 1986 is the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty . As a salute to the symbol of freedom for all Americans, cities'' and villages are invited to participate in this .historicevent by planting a tree for liberty. According to LarryNew bold. county Agricultural Agent, communities are encouraged to establish Shade Tree Commission and to observe Arbor Day as a reminder of the importance of trees to every day living. NEWBOLD SAID Cape May City has a very active shade tcee commission where effect is obvious visitors admire the extensive plantings of shade trees throughout the community. Arbor Day was first observed in Nebraska. J. Sterling , Morton, then a member of the state Board of Agriculture and later a United States Secretary of Agriculture, conceived the idea. On Jan. 4. 1872, the state Board of Agriculture adopted a resolution providing for a day. especiallyset apart and consecrated to tree planting in Nebraska and to be named Arbor Day. Nebraska's first Arbor Day resulted in the planting of more than a million trees.
