Discount Planned To Woo Canadians
WILDWOOD — The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to revive the sagging Canadian tourist business in the area, is sponsoring a program to encourage businesses in the Wildwoods to welcome Canadians with a discount equal to 15 percent of the cost of accommodations, meals, goods and services. -•The reason for the program is that with the strength of the U.S. dollar here and abroad. Canadian tourists have been staying home in the summer months or vacationing elsewhere. IN ORDER to "reintroduce" the Wildwoods to Canadians seeking sun and fun. the Greater Wildwood Chamber has started promoting the "Preferred Travel Plan" for Canadian tourists to rebuild what was once a very profitable market. The' chamber not only welcomes member par-
ticipation in the program, but participation from any business in the area participation fee is being assessed for each business location. THAT MONEY is being used by the chamber committee in charge to develop, manufacture and distribute identifying decals that will be displayed by businesses offering the discount plan. The seal design will only be known by Canadian tourists as a discount emblem. Participating businesses will receive a kit containing useful information outlining the program. decals for display, hints on dealing with Canadian tourists and a copy of the logo for advertising purposes. THE CHAMBER will . be advertising the new program in print and on radio in various sections of Canada as part of the program. A $2,000 grant has already been received by the state to help with the promotional costs. One ad has already been ordered in The Gazette in Montreal, that will reach one million Canadian homes. Participating businesses will be promoted and the chamber committee will act as a liaison between tourist and business when necessary. Arrangements have been made, through the Midlantic Union Trust and the Royal Bank of Canada to help speed up reservation accommodations for Canadian tourists visiting Cape May County IN THE PAST, a Cana dian visitor arranging a stay at a local motel or hotel would call and then mail a check. It takes quite some time for the check to clear. Now local motel need only instruct the Canadian visitor to go to a . local Royal Bank of Canada and have U.S. dollars wired to the Midlantic Union Trust. Area motel and hotel operators can contact Midlantic Union Trust for more information op that plan.
