Lower interest rates are creating a mini sales boom all along Five Mile Beach. A few columns ago. I mentioned the million dollar-plus sale of the Casa Nova Motel in Wildwood Crest. Since that writing, the Tangiers Motel has been sold, the Tempo Motel has new owners, and Dr. Terzigni's Cara Mara Motel has been sold by the NestorRanalli Real Estate office. That represents millions of dollars in sales and is big business by anybody's financial barometer. A LOCAL eatery with defades of tradition is rumored to be under sales agreement to a local motel owner and the sale is slated to be finalized within the next several weeks. Obviously, with respect to both parties involved, exact
specifics and properties can't be mentioned until settlement, but not to fear, I'll keep you posted as events progress. It will surprise you! I promised the members of the Wildwood Crest Fire Auxilliary that I would give frequent mention to their planned Hoagiesale 11 a.m. Saturday at the fi rehouse, Cardinal and Pacific. This is my second mention in as many weeks. I suppose that is frequent mention and my mission has been accomplished. SPEAKING OF food . If you are of a mind to have lunch and have your spouse followed while you dine, then you are in for a full service treat. Rumor has it that Jim Weisback. owner of the Weisback Detective Agency, is negotiating for the purchase of a North Wildwood Deli on New York Avenue. Apparently the deal is about to be consummated with a grand opening slated for early spring. I doubt if the eatery will be named the Weisback Deli & Detective Agency, but if it were I can envision quite a bit of national wire service publicity. At the very least, Jim is in store for a round of goodhearted joking. I'm already preparing my volley. A FEW WEEKS ago, I wrote a short spot praising the efforts of Joyce Be man, Wildwoods recreation director. I received many 'thank you" calls from those calling the mention "past due" Several of the callers were volunteers within the pro- *7 gram who felt that the tur- I naround was finally getting ' the mention that it deserved. AND THEN,.. Last week I began receiving calls from residents and parents who told me that the director had been fired. I spoke with Berrian about the situation and she, in a very professional manner, declined comment I respect that THOSE WHO called, however, had plenty of comment to make. It seems that a situation developed wherein Berrian, in defense of a co-worker, found herself caught in a squeeze between the city's personnel director. administrator, and tourism director. Her ter- _ mination ensued. According to the many callers, Berrian later attempted to apologize and [fj develop an understanding, |' but her efforts fell upon deaf '■ ears Hence, her dismissal from the department last ! Thursday. As of this writing ! the termination remains in I force. / \ - I HAVE BEEN approached by two individuals who are going to begin a petition drive to have Berrian reinstated as director of recreation. While a petition ' is a petition, the point remains that this is a con- [ troversial termination and ' most assuredly is far from ■ being over. My street-wise and savvy sources have indicated that i they expect several other shake-ups to occur in several other Wildwood De- | partments. They say that tension within the city is running high and a few "heads will roll". That is un- ! fortunate. Hopefully, the circumstances will be abated and the mood elevated [ with the better weather and pending season. The
municipal workers throughout the Wildwoods make up a very fine group of people doing a very fine job, 365 days each year. INTERESTING to note that Haliey's Comet has generated some welcome business for the Wildwoods. I spoke with several motel owners last week and each stated that they have had people respond to their "Comet Watch" specials. As you may know, the comet is most difficult to see this trip and sits just barely above the horizon as it makes its journey back into deeper space. Perhaps the best place to view the once-in-a-lifetime happening is at the shore. Sage motel owners have capitalized upon this fact and are offering reduced rates and an unobstructed view of the celestial event. It's, just a shame that it didn't become an Islandwide promotiofi. Any income this time of year is certainly a shot in the arm for the facilities that are open. In the same vein, if you are fortunate enough to live on Five Mile Beach, take a few moments out of your life and try to view the Comet. It requires a very early rising and a set of keen eyes or binocular assistance, but its sighting will be something to tell the grandkids about. I HAD THE occasion to speak with Leo Ciuliano the other day and he informed me that his father, Duke, is doing very well after recent
surgery. He is appreciative of the extensions of courtesy that h^ve been extended and his spirits are running high. That's good news! Also on the "feeling better" front is Christine Collins, who has just undergone a tonsilectomy at BTMH. It has been ice cream and jello and juices through a straw, but Christine is doing well and wants her classmates to know that she'll be occupying her usual seat when school reconvenes after spring break. Don't forget to vote in the April 15th school board elections. Not only are members going to be elected, but school budgets will be approved. Board positions are important positions and budgets are "big bucks". VOTE. A FINAL MENTION of the upcoming production of Fiddler on the Roof as presented by the Holly Beach Players at St. Ann's Auditorium April 25, 26 and 27. The event is a dinner and a show and your patronage is appreciated. Call 729-6950 for reservations. Some years ago, Phyllis Catanoso began the restoration of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. One of the main objectives was to turn the light back on! Under the direction of Steve MacDonald, the lighting of the light is taking steps closer to reality.
