Vinci Seeks Bus For Seniors

NORTH WILDWOOD - Mayor Lewis G. Vinci has asked state and federal authorities for aid and guidance to secure a van or mini-bus for the use of senior citizens, the handicapped and other people I in need of local transportation. Mayor Vinci said he has I appealed to the New Jersey ^ Transit Corp., Operators of " Transport of New Jersey

and the agency responsible for directing the use of casino revenues, to help fund a transportation plan for this resort. Nearly 25 percent of its residents are 65 and older and the same percentage holds true in the summer visitor population, the •mayor reported. EACH YEAR since the I960 census the number has grown, Mayor Vinci said.

The County Fare Free Transportation system is inadquate for North Wildwood, senior citizens, recreation and city officials have found. Fare Free takes people out of North Wildwood tor shopping three days a week. It brings others from outlaying areas into the City Senior and Recreation Centers at 10th and Central Avenues each day for the Department on Aging lunch program. NORTH WILDWOODS one of only three municipalities in the county with its own Senior Center and there are special transportation needs to be met, Vinci said. Vinci declared he is exploring ways to tap into the resources of the Federal Senior Citizens, Elderly Disabled Act, the State Division on Aging or Casino monies to fund a mini-bus or van for the city. I recently heard from Lena J Versaggi and she indicated that the community should "keep watching" as their efforts to rekindle the light continue. If the commission's efforts are successful, it will be a grand day for the historic structure, but more importantly, it should remind the community of the thousands of hours of volunteer work that have gone, unselfishly, into the restoration. It has been a job well done by dozens of civicminded North-Wildwood-ians. They are to be congratulated. If you are willing to devote expertise and/or time to the efforts, give Lena a call at 522-2710.
