G - Genealogy. "Genies" are regular patrons in libraries; we often average two or three a day. What's that? No, we don't have spirits emerging out of bottles of Barbara Eden look alikes left over from televisions' I Dream of Jeannie; librarians refer to genealogists as our "genies". Libraries are a recommended stop for anyone who has decided to research his or her family tree. We have a number of sources we can use to help ferret our genealogical information for families who are from Cape May County, other areas of New Jersey, other states in the U.S. and even foreign countries. IT WOULD take me several months to cover all our sources, so I will mention a few of the newer or most used sources for beginners and experienced "genies". ' The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy. added to the library's collection last year, is excellent and should not be overlooked. General readers who are serious interested in genealogy, possess some knowledge of their family tree and are familiar with a local librai7 and its collections, will find the book a logical next step in expanding their research efforts. Seasoned professionals will find The Source invaluable for its detailed introduction to the latest research techniques and its many creative suggestions on new ways to utilize existing data. BY REFERRING to The Source, a reader can quickly determine what records exist for the particular time period he is resear ching; what information he can expect to obtain, where he may locate the records, provided they are still available; and one found, how best to use them. In the event a record, or a portion of one, has been lost or destroyed this book will indictate so. thus helping to avoid weeks or events months of wasted research time. Whenever possible, the book recom- 1 mends additional or alternate sources to supplement existing information or to help replace missing \Tecords. The Source also includes a glossary of genealogical and research terms and a comprehen- V sive appendix of source locations throughout the United States. This book is located in the Reference Department (R929.1S). SOME OF THE titles available to check and read at your own pace at home are: How to Find Your Family Roots by Timothy Beard, about-Jialf of which is devoted-to ^.comprehensive guide to names and addresses of record repositories throughout the world; Searching For Your Ancestors by Gilbert H. Doane. which is clearlywritten and a basic prihier ; Know Your Ancestors by Ethel W. Williams emphasizes American research, sources and regional help. Building an American Pedigree by Norman E. Wright covers documentation. how to use the library in your research, material available from the Church

of the Latter Day Saints, court records, property records, military records etc. (R929.1W) The Reference Department also has Genealogical Research Methods and Sources published by the American Society of Genealogists (R929.1G). A Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives covers all the types of useful material available from the government. Census records (we have in our collection the Cape May County Census Records), Passenger Arrival Lists, Naturalization records, pension records, records of civilians during war time, records of merchant seamen, records of civilian government employes; all of which are available in microfilm from the National Archives. This guide tells you what information is included and how to get it (R016.929U). Tracing Your Ancestry Logbook by F. Wilbur Heimbald (R929.1H) contains blank forms such as charts, research check lists etc. „ that are available for photocopying. The library has the forms required to obtain "ship passenger arrival"' records and "veterans' records" from the National Archives. FOR LOCAL history searchers, we have the Gazette-Leader going all the way back, but it has no index, so you need a ball park date to search efficiently. We also include in our collection Officers and

Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War and Records of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War. Lists of deeds, marriages, and wills for the loca1 area are also available as a means of collecting information. There are a great numhec^of genealogical books that center on various ethnic groups and outline how to search in those areas. Pennsylvania German Pioneers (R325.2435S); Finding Our Fathers ; A guidebook of Jewish (re n e a lo g y (R929.1R); and Black Genesis are a mere smattering of the materials available in this specialized area of genealogy. So if you want to be a "genie" don't search yard sales for an exotic bottle, search the library for your ancestors! Professor Is Guest Speaker WILDWOOD - The Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society's annual spring dinner will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday. April 18, at Seasons Restaurant here. Guest speaker will be Professor Craig Kodell of Atlantic Community College, who will talk on "Pulpits and Preachers", the history of religion in early South Jersey. Call 465-3535 for reservations.
