Gillian's proposal calls for moving the wing currently on the Ninth Street jetty seaward to about the halfway point for the jetty and then extending it about 500 feet southward towards 10th Street. Sand would then be trucked into the area behind the wing to provide a new. large section of pro tected beachfront. "WE FIRST put wings on the jetties at the suggestion of the late John Carey during my term as a commissioner more than 20 years ago." Gillian said during his on-site news conference at Ninth Street. "Our intentions then were to extend the wings if they proved to be sucessful. but the extensions were never carried out. by subsequent administrations." The wings have proved successful in holding sand on the beach during the past 20 years, but Gillian contenos that the beaches can be dramatically enlarged if the wings are

moved out. raised to the height of the existing jetty, and extended southward, forming a natural seawall. If the experiment works as it has in the past, the beach south of the jetty to a wooden groin at 1 1th Street should fill in naturally, dramatically improving the bathing beach between 10th and 11th Streets.
