Fortunately, Pete Townshend doesn't have to prove anything. As the leader, songwriter, and guitarist for the now defunct British rock band The Who. he became a major pop force. Townshend was looked upon as a spokesman for his generation. and, being an articulate fellow, it was role he seemed to cherish. Now that his solo career is more than a hobby, we have to pay closer attention to his solo efforts, which is why White City (Atco) is such a disappointment. This isn't a bad record, just disjointed. ITS TUNES are far from memorable — except for the fact a song as insipid as Face The Face" could be a hit — and Townshend's performances barely make this worth repeated spins. Average isn't a word that's

been used very often to describe Townshend, but I'm afraid that's all White City has to offer. While the guiding light of The Who has an uneven long-player, the frontman, Roger Daltrey. has come up with his strongest effort, yet. In the past. Daltrey's solo albums were, at best, tepid, but here he's got classy material, strong backing, and a uniform sound, all of which should appeal to more than hardcore Who fans. HIGHLIGHTS ARE plentiful on Under A Raging Moon (Atlantic) but the track that stands out the most is Daltrey's winsome interpretation of Bryan Adams' "Let Me Down Easy." Not bad at all. For the past few years. Chicago s Alligator Records (P.O. Box 60234, Chicago IL. 60660) has

issued some of the hottest blues by todays greats. For those who haven t been picking up these hot platters. Genuine Houserockin' Music is a compilation worth buying. THIS IS the best way of getting a sample of Koko Taylor. Son Seals. Albert Collins. James Cotton, etc. Once having tasted this. I know you'll want to start buying up the entire Alligator blues catalog. This year is off to a good start for blues fans, and those who like Stevie Ray Yaughan are encouraged to check out New Orleans' Mason Ruffner. His debut for Columbia isn't as traditional as Vaughan's albums, as he often leaves the blues world for R&B and rock, but he plays guitar with feeling and he nas a convincing voice.
