MUA Alterations Meet Peak Flow
SWAINTON - Alterations under way at the Ocean City Region wastewater treatment plant are expected to enable it to meet its permit requirements even during peak sum like r flow periods, according to a county Municipal Utilities Authority official. "The proposed system for the addition of ferric choloride with polymer will reduce the organic loading into the rotating biological contractor unit process to within the range recommended as a result of EPA's research," said MUA Chief Engineer Charles M. Norms. V "AN ADDITIONAL fihal clarifier will be added! in 1987 in an effort to plan [in advance for the eventuality^ when the monthly average flow rates exceed 6.3 million gallons per day. "With the addition of the chemical facilities, effluent is expected to meet permit requirements even during peak summer flow periods." he added. THE AUTHORITY had looked at three different methods for dealing with a persistent, problem of meeting the effluent limits established in its New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System during peak summer flows. The traditional method of adding another set of rotating biological contractors would have cost the Authority $4.1 million.
while the chemical treatment option, including the construction of an additional clarifier. is more than $3 million less at $790,000. The second option of constructing a trickling filter ahead of the RBCs to reduce the organic load to the existing RBCs had a price tag of almost $2.94 million.
