Hotline Boosts Boating Safety

) CAPE MAY - The Boating Safety Hotline, a toll-free telephone service inaugurated by the Coast Guard in June 1985, is helping boaters all across the country get information on boating safety recalls and other safety-related topics. The hotline has been set up by the Coast Guard on an experimental basis to do ITS PLANTING TIME! three thinu>: Tell boat owners and Btiyers whether or not a particular boat model has been involved in a safety recall: take reports from boat owners concerning safety problems they are experiencing in their boats and determine if a safety recall is warranted, and answer technical questions on boating safety matters PERHAPS ONE of the i greatest benefits of the Hotline is realized when it is publicized and used in conjunction with the list of current boating safety recalls being conducted by boat and engine manufacturers. Benefits of the hotline are being felt in other ways too. The Coast Guard is starting to receive reports from boat owners regarding safety problems they are experiencing with their boats. As a result, several recall campaigns have already been generated through information and complaints received on the hotline. The Boating Safety Hotline is run by the Office of Boating, Public and Consumer Affairs in Coast Guard Headquarters. The hotline is in operation 8 a.m. to 4 p.m..
