Spring Sports Preview
OCEAN CITY - track welcomes back seniors Alexis Dudley and) James Brown for the 400 intermediates ;-Joe-' Wright in distance; Bob Krokenberger. Mike Tall and Vince Iannace behind the javelin. Junior Leon Brown, adding 1 10 annd 400 hurdles to his 100 and 200 long jump, will be joined by Greg Kelly in distance and Chris Armstrong for the pole vault. Coach Coiman expects his team to be one of the best. LOWER TOWNSHIP also hopes to be at the top with seniors Joe Bresan in the 800. 1600 and relay. Chris Hall handling hurdles as well as the high jump; Mark Schiffbauer also a high jumper; and Ray Bradley, another pole vaulter. Coach Colubiale is expecting the unexpected. WILD WOOD is looking for 38 eager athletes to take them further than last year's record. Seniors Larry Trainor ( hurdles 1. Robert'Spaulding (distance), and Paul Franco 1 shot), as well as junior sprinter Lawrence Johnson will lead the pack. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP and WILD WOOD CATHOLIC will also compete with Division II teams and we will be waiting to see top performers as the season gets underway. Girls' track also makes its debut this week with one Division I team and two Division II teams. OCEAN CITY will see Mary Jo Dougherty. Vicki . Miller. Vicki Vander, and Jackie Perry in the distance events. Monica Washington and Pam McFarland make up the sprint team, while Jane Harvey takes the high jump. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, under first year coach Kris Salvesen, hopes to make an impression in Division II competition. LOWER CAPE MAY will be another Division II contender with a much improved team. Area baseball will bring
back some old faces blended with some new. WILDWOOD players include senior Tom Sawyer in a duel role as catcher and center fielder. Steve Severio will be at second and Andre Harris will make his contribution on the mound. Returning for MIDDLE TOWNSHIP are outfielder Sean Smith and pitcher Rob Hicks Smith hit .354 last season while Hicks was 4-3 with one save. W ILDWOOD CATHOLIC coach Toland is looking for improvement this year. With Frank Lafferty. a second base hitter with a .491 average last season, they might prove to be in the running in '86. LOWER CAPE MAY will be looking to third baseman Mark Remy to duplicate his .471 '85 season. Teammates Frank Digilio. catcher, and Steve Worrell, pitcher, will be adding their expertise to veteran coach Weeks' hopes for a good year. Coach Mensmger of OCEAN CITY will start his season wilh two seniors on tK injury list. He is hoping Chris Colter and Bob Goudie will be recovered and back in the lineup real soon. Softball might just have to contend with another top OCEAN CITY Team Under Coach Watson they will depend on pitcher Cindy Rau, shortstop Kellie Ross, thirdbaseman Kristie Miller, and outfielders Lynn Argoe and Dorann Foglio. Aggressive younger players will be a positive factor in the Raider's coming season. LOWER CAPE MAY. under the direction of Debbie McFall. will have Janet McGraw on the mound. Infielders will be first baseman Michelle McKeon, second baseman Denise Smith, and shortstop Michelle Boyd. Outfielders Tammy Davis. Linda Conover. Having played Softball, basketball, and hockey she is winding down her college career wi|h a record in assists as a rrfemtJer of the Cavs basketball squad, and is a three-time MVP for the hockey team. The former Wildwood Catholic star hopes to take her experience into teaching, coaching, and refereeing. Good luck, Michelle! Parks Seek Lifeguards BELLEPLAIN - Applicants for lifeguard positions at the state park here as well as the state's other 14 inland beach parks, are being sought by the state Department of Environmental Protection. Each applicant must present evidence of a medical examination stating that he or she is physically qualified to 'perform the duties. The test for the South Jersey inland area will be held at the Atsion Recreation Area, Atsion • (Burlington County), 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10.
