Chamber Squabbles Over Schrnidt Letter

By GREGG LAWSON 1 . COURT HOUSE - The Middle Township Chamber of Commerce Monday night squabbled for more than 40 minutes over a letter drafted and sent to township committee March 25 criticizing the Middle T o*w nship Sewage Commission. Then the chamber voted unanimously that all future letters on chamber letterhead must be signed by all members of the board of directors. It also voted unanimously to tape the minutes of its meetings. The letter, written by local attorney Frederick W. Schmidt Jr. and signed by President Frank Ross, was to have been okayed by a three-man committee and sent to the township, according to Rdss. . HOWEVER. SOME chamber members said " they thought the letter would be reviewed by the committee and sent back for another vote And one member of the committee. Charles Raff, owner of Raff's Moving and Storage, said he didn't review it. "We didn't want to hold it otfer until the next meeting, because there was a time factor involved," Ross said "We assigned the committee to pick up copies and review it and then send it." "But there was no motion on that." Gary Rudy said. •YES. WE 1)1!) HAVE a motion and agreement." Ross said. I didn't know I sat there and didn't hear half the meeting." Rudy said later "I was under the impression the letter was going back to (the review) committee, coming back < to the chamber Lafid then it would be senrout," said Gene DeGenova. "If it was presented that way. it was presented erroneously or it was misunderstood." Ross said. I The letter was read in

full at the previous chamber meeting. "Fred Schmidt, did go through the letter, but I was under the mipression there would Be parts deleted." said Richard Haefner. ROSS SAID there were recommendations for change, and "they were implemented." Raff, who was vacationing in Florida, said he didn't see a copy of the letter until after it was sent. Robert Hodges, the second member of the committee. said he reviewed the letter. "Bob told me as of Wednesday night he had not read it." said Linda Dunbar. "He was over our house last week." "I haven't reviewed the new thing." Hodges said. "But I read the first letter." A CHECK OF the last meeting's minutes showed that a draft of the letter was read, but no voice vote was recorded. "I realize the minutes don't reflect the full intent of what was presented." Ross said, "the fact that a member of the committee goes away — I can't forsee that. "And I personally have no problem with it." he added. "When the fatts are so overwhelming, as they are in this letter. I don't think we should be arguing about how it was drafted." Schmidt said. "The only thing relevant here tonight are the facts." he added. "Everyone is concerned about form over substance." Schmidt then asked chamber members if "anyone disagreed with the substance of the letter " There was no response. T H E C II A M B E R authorized Schmidt to draft a letter to township committee. asking it to be more involved in the sewage issue. "I'm not in j Sewerage District No. 1 and I don't

; think the letter addressed ^ problems that I have.'" said > Haefner. who lives in an I unsewered area. "The 1 sewer district can't do • anything for me; township I committee has to. "Nobody wants to make • a decision." Haefner added. "The commission doesn't want to spend a lot of money and then be taken over by an MUA; the township committee doesn't want to make a decision that is politically unsound. "There are a lot of people who don't want sewers," he said "It will cost them too much morv*5r~'4"~ To Hear Chef SEA ISLE CITY - Chef Matchuk of the Atlantic Community College staff will be guest speaker at the meeting of Chapter 710.
