Recycling of Clay Will Pay for MUA

SWAtpffflN - An innovative plan for using material from a recent construction project will bring the county municipal Utilities Authority an immediate check for $5,000 and provide about $30,000 worth of clay which will be needed to cap closed portions of its landfill. The material, a slurry mixture comprised of 80 percent fresh water and 20 percent betonyte clay, was

used as a drilling lubricant in the authority's sewer line project at Townsends Inlet. THE UNIQUE directionally controlled drilling technique of running a pipeline under a waterway was completed at Townsends Inlet last week. The new method saved users of the CMCMUA regional wastewater treatment system a total of almost $600,000 while causing a minimal disruption to the environment. The 1,400-foot section of pipeline under Townsends Inlet is part of a pipeline that will carry wastewater from Sea Isle City to the Seven Mile Beach/Middle Region wastewater treatment plant near the Crest Haven complete in Middle Township. THE SUBCONTRACTOR Ole Hansen & Sons Inc. of Pleasantville, had made arrangements to dump the material in a pit behind the Martee Landfill in the Burleigh section of Middle Township, where it would remain until the

water evaporated, leaving only the clay, which was expected to be recycled. After 180,000 gallons of the clay and fresh water mixture were dumped at the Martee site, however, Middle Township Solicitor Bruce Gorman threatened to file suit if the dumping continued.
