H » Handicrafts "I had saved an old magazine article with directions on crocheting a hammock, and now I can't find it — can you get me a copy?" Librarian: "Do you remember which magazine it was from?" "Not really ... it might be Woman's Day. Family Circle. Sunset. Better Homes and Gardens. McCall's or something I picked up I really couldn't say." Librarian: "How long ago did it appear? "■ "It was about five or six. maybe seven vears old." HOW IK) YOU find a magazine article in the how-to-do-it area, when you don't know where it appeared and have only a vague idea of when it, was printed'' We librarians have several tools to assist in our search. A typical search would begin with the Index to How to-do it. which indexes 50 different magazines that regularly feature how-to-do-it articles with an emphasis on arts and crafts, astromony. automobiles, boats, computers, electronics. fiber arts, furniture. hi-fi and stereo, hobbies, house and home, lapidary, photography, radio, sports, television, t o o 1 s . toys and woodworking. It culls these articles from a wife variety of titles' which include: New Shelter. Woodworker. McCall's Needlework and Crafts and Byte. ANOTHER step would be How-To. 1400 Best Books on Doing Almost Everything by Bill Katz. This index covers things like blacksmithing, baton twirling, gambling and betting, robotics, bodybuilding, navigation, welding and the commonly thought of how-to books This would be-included in the search in hopes that the magazine article was later incorporated into a book. Another possibility found on the County Library shelves is Make-it. an InEgo's Hosts 'Heart Might' SOMERS POINT - A " Save Your Heart Night." for the prevention of heart disease, is set for Ego's Restaurant, Bay Avenue. 6 p.m. tomorrow. A $5 admission includes buffet, dancing and prizes.
dex to Projects and i I Materials which also in- < i dexes books and covers the < range from novice to j teacher and includes the renovative arts. | needlework, plastics. ; ceramics, electronics, | leather, metal and wood. LOOKING in the Index to j Handicrafts. Modelmaking i and Workshop Projects | which indexes 1.000 British , and American books as ( well as 15 magazines not found in other indexes showed. It includes clock repairs, paper sculpture, flutes and hammocks We looked up the references to hammocks and found three magazine articles and two books listed. The local library has two of the magazine artciles which we ferret out ; one is in storage and the other is on microfiche. The patron is intrigued by one article although it is not the original for which he was searching. THE BOOK IS listed in our card catalog but is not on the shelf, so we fill out a reserve card so that when it is returned the patron will be called and notified. The remaining book listed in the index is not in our collection, so an interlibrary loan request is filled out The patron photocopies the article he is interested in and returns home. The request slip is searched to make sure the book is in the current circulation and not on loan to a branch or in the overdues or missing files; and its check-out card is flagged for immediate attention. The inter-library loan request is searched on the computer and it is found that six libraries have the book in their collection — the closest location being the Lincoln Trails System of Illinois. THE REQUEST for the book is electronically mailed and the next day comes the reply that its copy is at the binders and unavailable. The request is electronically forwarded to the San Antonio Public Library, which replies that it is being mailed to us. Back in the local County Library, a patron returns a book on handicrafts and when it has been carded the staff member notices that it has been flagged and calls the patron. THESE ARE the actual steps taken in a search in an effort to find material on a handicraft article. The library also has materials
on individual crafts such as weaving, furniture making etc. that would be searched if appropriate Craft Supplies are often a problem for local artists and craftsmen which can identified in The Catalog Source for Creative People. Mail Order Crafts Catalog. Craft Sources, and the National Guide to Craft Supplies. So be crafty; check out the library.
