U.S. Outlines Plan For Algae Study
SWAINTON - In a letter to the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority', a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official pointed out that the algae blooms that plagued southern New Jersey last summer hit other areas as well, and confirmed that there is no known cause for the socalled green tides. Mayor Lewis G. Vinci has urged all residents to participate and cooperate with the special bulk trash collection efforts of the city. "The results of last summer's monitoring," Caspe wrote to CMCMUA Executive Director George Marinaksi, "indicated that the green tide appears to be more widespread than just in southern New Jersey, as is evidenced by blooms identified in Nassau County's involvement. "Causes, effects and limiting growth factors of blooms are unknown." he added. According to Caspe, the USEPA will continue to conduct nearshore water sampling for bacteria levels and dissolved oxygen An NJDEP official, he wrote, will be conducting a survey to determine nutrient loadings from a wastewater treatment plant outfall and a nearby inlet.
