Sheneman's Exxon Open Until Sept. 15
By GREGG LAWSON STONE HARBOR - This borough's only gasoline service station will remain open "at least until Sept. 15," according to proprietor Don Sheneman. The Exxon corporation originally decided to close its Stone Harbor station, at 9404 3rd Avenue, on May 1. But Sheneman said an outpouring of community support changed the company 's position. Petitions circculated by the local Chamber of Commerce. carrying hundreds of signatures, were sent Federal Express last week to the Exxon Corporation protesting the closing. •THE NEEDS OF a significant number of yearround senior citizens and summer visitors require the services of the station as do the emergency vehicles of the borough," the petition reads. "Closing the station is a total disservice to the I people and institutions of Stone Harbor." Chamber President Jack IFitzpatrick also sent a telegram protesting the closing to Exxon President Randall Myer in Houston. Tx. Sheneman told this newspaper he received a phone call from Rod Lusar. Exxon sales representative, asking him to keep the station open through the summer. The 1 decision would be up to 9 Sheneman and his wife, | Lusar said. •I FEEL AS IF I owe it to the town to keep it open until Sept. 15." Sheneman said. When asked if Exxon
received any calls or letters protesting the closing, area representative Art Dudley replied, "no. Nothing. "Exxon did make him the offer." Dudley said. "It's been his decision, not ours, all along."
