The school board elections are now behind us. In Wildwood Crest, Peggy Lewis retained her seat for a fourth term. Stanley Gage was unseated by Wildwood High instructor Ed Bgrneman. The bottom line in this election is that Philip Baker School will be closed and the addition to Crest Memorial will occur The Crest's budget was also approved. In Wildwood, Elizabeth Zuzolock retainer her board position. Joining the Wildwood Board of Education will be Ernest Troiano Jr. and Karen Nelson. As in the Crest, the budget was approved. North Wildwood will be returning Steve Ritchie. Frank Turse. Craig Garrabrant. and Richard Vance. The budget also received approval WEST WILDWOOD has two incumbents returning • to the board. Esther Wheaton and Marguerite Hays were re-elected and Katherine l.etton was elected to complete the two-year term opened when Blanche Chatburn resigned According to fashion, the West Wildwood budget was approved. Across the Island, approximately 1.000 people turned out to vote for their elected representatives. One good beach fee issue will attract more than twice this number. I FIND THIS amazing Collectively, the thousand or so people who turned out to cast their vote managed to approve over $10 million in tax monies. In many instances. the school budget rivals the municipal budget in pure dollar amount It is an area of magnitude. Personally. I find school spending to be one area that is an investment in our future and perhaps more monies should be spent. What seems odd is that nobody really cares. Ten million dollars! If . only municipal elected officials had it so easy The school districts are all well managed, budgets are lean hof hardly anybody provides ballot input. Interesting IN THE better-latmhan never category, this iS the weekend for the Annual Jaycee Trade Show in Wildwood s Convention Hall. The exhibitions will be open from 5 p.m. Friday and from noon Saturday
and Sunday The show will close nightly at 9. This is an excellent event and most asuredly a "feather in the cap" for our Jaycee organization. The trade show has brought them regional acclaim and has assisted the group in achieving top national honors for the past several years. The Jaycees are to be congratulated. The show is open to all who have a vestec interest in the hotel/restaurant industry. This year the Jaycees expect 75 vendors to display their wares. Sales will abound and the season is officially open in the Wildwoods. LAST WEEK. I mentioned the Comet Watch as a great escape weekend idea. The tourism department has a few more offerings for those interested in * capitalizing on the event. The Annual Custom Car Show will be held May 17 and 18. Running concurrently with the Car Show will be a new event. The Chocolate Festival on the 18th of May. The East Coast Stunt Flyinj^Contest is slated for May 24 and 25. and concurrently with the kite show will be a visit from King Neptune May 25. Your patronage and attendance at these local events is appreciated by those who have spent the winter planning the "something to do" weekends. ALSO. LAST week I mentioned very active BoyScout Troop 185 based on Five Mile Beach. More scouting news... It should be noted that two local scouts have reached the pinnacle of achievement and are to be congratulated Attaining the rank of Eagle Scout from Troop #185 are Andrew Brannen and Eric Shenkus. A dinner was given in thier honor April 15 at the Moose Hall in North Wildwood. I DROVE BY the English Grill last week and the owners are to be applauded for the exterior paint work and tastefully coordinated awnings The place looks good! Speaking ">f looking good, the renovations of KONA sports have created an attractive retail outlet on Rio Grande Boulevard. Another finp/tRndidate for next year's Cape May County Beautification Award! Everybody knows that the "Aquarium" idea has goneby the wayside. It seems that a multi-million dollar tourism industry can't compete with a multimillion dollar soup company. Oh. well. BIT ...ANOTHER fine opportunity has presented itself Virginia Beach has dropped the ball for the site city for the Jacques Cousteau Center. SO... the Wildwoods should jump on the bandwagon. The society has raised over $3 million dollars for construction and several major companies have pledged support The center is expected to attract over 650.000 visitors per year Good idea?
In the things-to-do section of this column, two events to mark on your calender. The first is the production of Fiddler on the Roof by the Holly Beach Players Friday, Saturday and Sunday in St. Ann's Auditorium. Show time is 8 p.m. and dinner will be served from 6 p.m. on. For reservations, call 729-6950. Second event is the Wildwood Home and School Association's planned Fun Fair Saturday at the Glenwood Avenue School 11 a.m. -2 p.m. Refreshments will be available. If is with sadness that we note the passing of Lillian Mayer. A native Wildwoodian, Mrs. Mayer was the
daughter of E.Z. Fox. the well known and much respected past park commissioner for the City of Wildwood. Fox park was named in his honor. Surviving Mrs. Mayer, in addition to her husband. Max, is her sister Dorrit Fox Cummings of Wildwood Crest. Georgia's Post CAPE MAY - Army Staff Sgt. Samuel A.. Bakley, whose wife. Eugenie, is the daughter of Edward A. and Alta McGovern of 1201 Washington St., this city, has arrived for duty with the 608th Ordinance Company, Fort Benning, Ga.
