Two evei^s within A8 hours in the past week clearly describe the special nature of life in high sdnool that hasn't changed much at all over the years. Those two occasions set me parameters for the range of activities and farrmy / pride that are so essential/ when anyone tries to assess the value of public education. Both events are selective and the culmination of intense anticipation. They are the Prom and the induction ceremony of the National Honor Society Participation in both of these events is limited of course, and attendance at
them is part of h very inft ion process, l process for purely social, if scholarship, adership. and ? membership ional Honor TOGETHER you would have to conclude that any youngster who participated in both has made a significant mark at Lower Cape May Regional in the course of his or her school career It is also most likely that these students are the product of supportive and demanding homes. The Prom is a magical event that transforms adolescents who wear a i changing variety of sweat shirts and jeans into ladies and gentlemen in formal „ wear. It is a brief interlude in their world of reality when the anticipation of a very special evening transcends the meal, the music, the pictures and the favors. THE GREAT disappointment of the evening is only in those students who do not attend, who miss a significant ritual of youth in the process, and in many cases deny their families participation in that moment when a child "prepares" for the prom. Some youngsters reject the event because they rebel against any ritual, and for some, the expense o i- the affair seems frivolous. Others do not attend because ultimately it is an event of social pairing and rthey are isolated. It hurts Knowing that we have students who wait to be asked only to be disappointed. THE NATIONAL Honor Society induction is a more selective event and a way that the school has to reorganize those traits we most cherish and seek to instill as a part of the education we provide. With a minimum of five semesters of academic excellence as a foundation students are selected on the basis of other traits that require a "return on investment". These are the students of "the turnkey" approach who have used their intellect and dedication to improve their school and community. The anticipation of being named to the National Honor Society is also a family affair and the. memories of the ritual induction are at least as lasting and meaningful as preparing to go to the Prom. Fifty-two of our students are now in the National Honor Society. Thre^hqndred attended the Prom>> There is a lot of family pride in those youngsters and those events. For some of our students their opportunities to be a part of these occasions is gone , for the others, don't let them slip away.
