Waterball Clash Will Pit Firemen

AVALON - It will be firehoses at point blank range when the Cape May County Firemen's Association holds its sixth annual waterball competition here Sunday, to raise money for the Burn Foundation Hosted by the Avalon Fire Department, last year's champions, the competition will begin at noon at the municipal parking lot, 29th Street and Avalon Avenue. The single elimination tournament

will continue until one fire company emerges victorious. WATERBALL is played soccer style with a five-foot ball. Each team consists of two hose crews using high pressure streams of water to force the ball across their opponent's goal line. Last year 16 of the county's fire companies participated and even more teams are expected this year.

DEL, HAVEN >- The damp soccer fields at the K County Park South saw ac- ^ tion Saturday afternoon as the Cape Express Locomotives tied Galloway Township 1-1. The tie was achieved in the final minutes of play as a Brian Daily pass allowed Tommy Rich to "head" the ball into the net. Hamilton Township shut out the Express Engineers 4-0, despite Dominic Romeo's outstanding defense. On Sunday. Coaches Ed Fretz and Yogi Kurtz led a caravan of Midnight Special players to Trenton to combat the Hiberean Celtics. The Celtics won 3-1, despite excellent defense by fullback Eben Wells. Paul O'Brien had the lone tally for the Midnight Special. The express Locomotives tore through Moorestown Sunday, winning 3-0. Gary Lucas, Keith Kirsch and Kim Hopkins scored for the winners. Mount Laurel's "A" team headed south to confront the Express Silver Streak and added a 6-3 win to their record. Jason McKinley, Joe Higman and Bryan Ekstrom scored for the Express. The final Express game of the weekend had them losing to Galloway Township 4-2. Sean French and Kenny Kirsch scored for the Express. N. Ireland Benefit Set VILLAS - A benefit for "Project Children" to bring children of Northern/ Ireland to this country for > six weeks, will be held at St. Raymond's Hall May 17. There will be a hot buffet at 8 p.m.. and music for Irish and American dancing by the Pat Campbell Band 9 p.m.-l a.m. Beer and set-ups will be provided. The Avalon Fire Department team has won three of the five past events, with Sea Isle City firefighters winning the remaining two. Course Taken By Pietropaula WILDWOOD - Marine Pfc. Ralph T. Pietropaula. son of Ralph T. Pietropaula Sr. of 2702 Park Blvd., has completed the Infantry Combat Training course at Marine Corps Base. Camp Pendleton, CA. A 1983 graduate of Wildwood High School, he joined the Marine Corps in August 1985.

The Firemen's Association has raised nearly $10,000 to support the operation of the Burn Foundation burn centers which serve the Southern New Jersey area. THEY ARE located at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, St. Agnes Medical Centerand St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, which serves Northern New Jersey, is an affiliate member of the Burn Foundation. Admission to the event is free and refreshments will be available.
