School Elections * Incumbents Toppled In 3 of 16 Districts
By E.J. DUFFY Rain, wind, unchallenged candidates, voter satisfaction and apathy combined for a slight turnout in most school elections last week. With no races, Cape May and Dennis Townships saw 115 and 69 voters, respectively. But four-way contests in Middle and Upper townships drew less than 315 votes each. Ocean City saw its biggest turnout in years, however, with 1,137 voting in another four-way race for three seats. Incumbents held their seats except in Lower Township. where voters replaced two of three with newcomers, and in Wildwood Crest and Woodbine where one board member in each lost. Voters, indicating satisfaction with school operations, approved 1986-'87 budgets in all 16 districts. Following is a summary of their election results: AVALON Incumbents Brian B. Campbell, bdhrd president, and Dr. William F. Robinson, held their seats with 286 and 292 votes, respectively. Challenger Jane W. Narringan finished last with 22S votes in her bid for one of the two three-year positions. Suzanne E. Keen collected 342 votes for an unexpired one-year term with one vote for write-in Eileen Maranakis. Current Expense of $1,101,669 won approval 334-133 and $141,000 Capital Outlay by 308-123. CAPE MAY Standing unopposed, board president Anita K. DeSatnick, board member Arnold C. Nyblade and newcomer Bert Reid drew 98. 86 and 84 votes, respectively. with 28 for Sidney T> Wetherill who withdrew from the election too late to be removed from the ballot. * Voters approved $631,950 in Current Expense 88-20 and Capital Outlay of $25,000 by 89-19.
CAPE MAY POINT Unchallenged, James J. Smith won reelection to his three-year seat 31-3 with Current Expense of $50,694 approved by the same margin. DENNIS TOWNSHIP Four unopposed candidates won election. Board president Thomas J. Champion garnered 62 votes with 52 for incumbent Robert R. Young and 60 for incumbent Charles T. Camp. Current Expense. $1,887,036, won approval 61-8. LOWER CAPE MAY REG. (Cape May. West Cape May. Lower Township) Only township voters selected candidates for three of the Lower's six seats on the nine-member board. They reelected Delton Brooks, board president. ^ 518 votes, tapping newcomers Steven V. Bianco and William R. Lucas for two vacancies. They drew 497 and 447 votes, respectively, to 303 for Bart J. Russell who also lost as an incumbent in Lower's elementary district (see below). Voters from the three municipalities together approved $5,063,237 in Current Expense 569-288 and $75,000 in Capital Outlay 559-214. LOWER TOWNSHIP Voters reelected Diana L. Hevener by 401 votes, but replaced incumbents Bart J . Russell and Anna "Dolly" MacDonald with Dr. James W. Rochford and Michael P Brogan. Rochford garnered 380 votes to 370 for Brogan, 355 for MacDonald. 279 for Russell. 184 for Dorothy Crawford and one write-in for David Chapman. Current Expense of $3,179,026 passed 369-205 and $40,000 in Capital Outlay by 472-194. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP Challenger Gregory C. Bostard failed to unseat any of the three incumbents. He
collected 145 votes to 184 for board president Calvin L. Back, 239 for vice president John W. Hand and 224 for Benton G. Weimer. Voters, 208-77, approved $4,722,615 in Current Expense. NORTH WILDWOOD Unchallenged for threeyear terms, incumbents Richard S. Vance, vice president. Frank Turse and Craig Garrabrant collected 109, 94 and 91 votes, respectively. Unopposed for an - unexpired one-year term, Stephen H. Ritchie garnered 103 votes. Voters, 98-24, approved $1,920,388 in Current Expense, 98-21 on $50,000 Capital Outlay and 104-20 on a $700,000 bond referendum. OCEAN CITY Donald W. Johnson, vice president, and Dr. Earnest C. Dunn drew 645 and 678 votes, respectively, in reelection bids. With 824 votes, newcomer Patricia Harris outdistanced all, winning a third three-year seat over newcomer C. Gus Bruno who collected 560 votes. Current Expense of $12,823,316 passed 615-375 and $500,000 in Capital Outlay by 497-395. STONE HARBOR Douglas V. Stanford collected 45 of 55 votes cast in his uncontested bid for reelection to a sixth term. By 44-9, voters approved $606,842 in Current Expense. UPPER TOWNSHIP Eugene R. Chojnacki and Donald Delia Porta won relection with 247 and 236 votes, respectively, while Dr. Edward J. Kozakowski won a third three-year seat with 300 votes to 215 for another newcomer. Frank J. Margaliano. David Blyer collected one write-in vote. Voters approved $4,913,973 in Current Expense 245-85. WEST CAPE MAY Hillary Russell-Pritchard won election to a vacant seat I with 21 write-in votes I because no one filed as a I candidate. I Linda Monge drew nine I write-ins with three for I retiring board member Cons' stance VonColln and one each for Henry Wise Jr. and Charles R. Wilson. Voters approved $175,729 for Current Expense 36-10 and $1,000 in Capital Outlay 40-6. WEST WILDWOOD Ester Wheaton, vice president, and Marguerite . Hays won reelection with 22 votes each for three-year terms while Catherine Letton collected 21 votes for an Tuckahoe Plant Sale TUCKAHOE - The Ladies Auxiliary of the Tuckahoe Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a sale of plants for Mothers' Day beginning May 4. A variety of potted * plants, hanging baskets, and novelty arrangements will be offered. Sale hours are: 7-11 a.m. Sunday. The other seats went to newcomers Ernst Troiano Jr. with 251 and Karen Anne Nelson with 180. Jerome Brown finished fourth with 162 votes to 107 for William R. Berry. 100 for Bennie V. Langford and 82 for John F. Dever. All were newcomers. Vema Murray filed as a candidate, but withdrew.
Current Expense of $5,501,819 won approval 222-118 and $250,000 in Capital Outlay by 203-124. WILDWOOD CREST Voters reelected board president Margaret D. Lewis with 302 votes but replaced board member Stanley W. Gage with Edward L. Borneman fof a second three-year scat. He won it with 271 votes to 211 for Gage, and 170 and 141 votes, respectively, fonnewcomers James B. Kompus and his running mate. Kirk Hastings. Current Expense of $2,032,200 passed 315-160 and $68,000 in Capital Outlay by 306-164.
WOODBINE Norma Price and Chris- . tina Singleton won reelection with 108 and 177 votes, respectively, but voters replaced vice president Thomas E. Mold with Fred Felicia no. Mold, at 95 votes, finished last in the five-way race for three three-year seats after Susan S. Peek with 99 votes and Feliciano's 104. Roland Alexemberg beat Linda K. Holmes to twoyear term 117-84 while Gregory Hudgi'ns Sr. edged Donald T. St. George from a one-year seat 104-100. Voters approved $349,306 in Current Expense 82-58 and $1 ,000 in Capital Outlay 75-59. t
