My father-in-law was a wise man. He is long gone, but the things he said often come back to me. Especially., on Saturday* nights. He believed in Saturday nights. ^ A surgeon, and a divorced man in mid-life, he spent his week in the operating room or in the clinic. But. on Saturday night when he was off. he liked to go to a restaurant or sidewalk cafe to listen. I REMEMBER he once told me he liked to be in the ' company of women even if they didn't know he existed. "Just to be amongst them," he said. "To listen to the rustle of their skirts." I don't think too many women rustle any longer, but as time goes by. I understand better what he was saying. The hubby and I don't have to go out to listen. We are lucky. But on Saturday night we do like to gel together. To listen. Even if we are watching TV, we are still listening. WHEN A CHARLIE CHAN movie is on. we like to settle I in and listen to Detective Chan's fortune cookie philosophy. Since they are usually scheduled for past prime time. 1 j am not always able to stay awake throughout the movie. | Nor is The Hubby. ; But at the end we manage to patch together how the plot went by listenipg to one another describe the parts we remember before we fell asleep. I'll say. "Remember when the French woman with the turban was found in the stateroom of the man from y Tangier?" "IJ3AW THAT PART." The Hubby will say, "but then 1 think I fell asleep when she was questioned as to why she was in that stateroom What did she say?" "She said she was looking for her pearl choker which had disappeared. She said she saw the man who had the stateroom put it into his brief case. Then I fell asleep.' "Well. I woke up about that time,'" The Hubby will say. "Chan questioned the woman and she stuck to her story . " "What about the pearl choker?" I'll ask "Well, that's a long story." The Hubby will say "I'M HERE TO LISTEN." I'll say moving a little closer. "The pearl choker was found finally in No. 2 son' shoe." "That sounds about right." I'll say. "Things like that happen all the time around here ." "Do you have a pearl choker?" The Hubby will ask. "You never bought me one," I'll say. "You don't need a pearl choker, honey. You're pretty just the way you are." Saturday night. Silly time.
Our Readers Write The Ugliness of War ' To The Editor: One sometimes gets the impression that Americans think war is a ball game, us against "them." We don't seem to grasp the ugliness of war until it's too late: perhaps it's because we haven't played a home game in over a hundred years. Nuclear war. the ultimate game, will not give us a chance to learn the lesson. STEPHEN P. LOCK West Cape May Do you have an opinion on this subject? Write a letter to the editor, P.O. As you all know, columnist Joe Zelnik is no relative of the editor, Joseph R. Zelnik. Columnist Joe is a sweet, lovable, compassionate man with many talents and is a most intelligent and capable writer. On the otber hand. Editor Joseph R. Zelnik is the other half of Jekyll and Hyde: a cunning, shrewd, conniving product of the Fourth Estate who continually takes potshots at such outstanding personalities as Bill Sturm, Ralph Evans and King Nummy. Thank God that Friday afternoon deadline is over. Bon voyage. PAUL C. JERRY' ROWLAND Stone Harbor
