Fifth Tulip Festival Cape May Blossoms To Honor Capt . Mey
CAPE MAY -There will be a big and guaranteed colorful breakout in Victorian Cape May This weekend. There is. however, no need to alert the local gendarmerie. Saturday marks the start of the city's fifth annual Tulip Festival, which will run through May 2 and honors Dutch Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. who is credited with being the first European to spot the land which has been named after him. WITH A little cooperation from the weather, it will also mark the blossoming of 60,000 multi-colored Dutch tulip bulbs, an increase of 10.000 over last year's spectacular display. MANY OF the ac'Jvities kicking off the festival will tl take place at the Victorian s Bandstand in Rotary Park. fi off Lyle Lane. h Bob Hoffnagle and Sons a (the Hoffnagle Family F Band) will provide music 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Joyful notes will spread to the nearby Washington Street Mall by way of a strolling accordion player. To open the festivities. Mayor Arthur Blomkvest and his wife will welcome the Tulip Festival Queen, a local teenager selected by a panel of judges on the basis of an essay contest. THE JOANNE Reagan Dance Studios will field (or more accurately, street > 36 boys and girls in Dutch costumes to perform Klompendanse. a Dutch folk dance in wooden shoes, and Straatwassen. the Holland tradition of scrubbing down the streets. Less strenuous entertain ment will be provided by a puppet show of Dutch .tales* produced by the NewJersey Performing Arts Guild. Winners of the tulip garden contest will be announced during the afternoon. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts will conduct trolley tours of the , winning gardens 1-3 p.m. TO SATISFY the appetites sparked by all this activity, there will be a variety of Dutch foods available. Included are wurst with sauerkraut, apple fritters, pretzels, windmill cookies, soft drinks, and juices. These will be on sale at street stands. The Saturday events will be repeated Sunday On Tuesday, April 29. Cape May Community ' Women's Club will exhibit unusual flower arangements at the Welcome Center. Lafayette Street at Bank Street. Arrangements will include: "Breakfast in Bed." "'Lunch for Two,'" "Cocktail Hour," and "Dinner at Eight". THE EVENT will include a Tulip Tea and a slide show entitled "Flower and Bulbs". As in past years, the Tulip Festival is organized by three individuals. Chairperson is Carin Fedderman and co-chairman is Milly LaCanfora. both of the Chamber of Commerce. The festival's planting chairman is Harry Lozour of the city's Shade Tree Commission.
