(JAKffcT DO IT YOURSELF FLOORING It's easy, fun and will save you money. These are a few good reasons for installing tile flooring yourself. You need a chalk line, notched trowel, a sharp pointed awl, a utility knife, tape measure, tile and adhesive. The existing floor must first be made smooth, sturdy and ' free of dust. oil. wax and any foreign matter. Once this is done you can begin to layout the room. This is not difficult First find the center of each end of the room using the tape measure. Mark the center by driving a nail into the floor at each end of the room. Then apply chalk to a string and stretch the string tightly between the two nails. Pull on the string and let it snap back to the floor to mark the line. Measure along this line perpendicular to the first line to find the center of the floor. Draw a second line perpendicular to.the first line through this point. Use a carpenter's square to make a right angle to the first line. Now that you have found the center of the room, place loose tiles along the two lines. The last tile on each side of the room must be at least 4'A inches. If not. move the whole row over half a tile and snap a new line. Repeat this process with the other line and you haw the exact starting point. Now you are ready to spread the adhesive. Using the trowel, spread adhesive over chalk lines leaving the center of each line exposed. Remember to follow instructions on the label of the adhesive can. If adhesive is spread too quickly it may ooze up through the joints. Allow adhesive to dry. When it's dry and tacky, re-snap the chalk lines. Now you can install the tile. Begin by laying tile at the intersection of the two chalk lines. Work out from the center, making sure that the tiles are pressed firmly against the preceding tiles and that the edges follow the chalk lines. After half the room is done, spread adhesive over the other half and allow to dry thoroughly, then start at the center of the room and complete the floor. The last row must be measured and cut to fit. AVALOl CARPET, TILE AND FUDORTVJG WAREHOUSE OUTLET CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE HAND AVE & THE RAILROAD MON.-FII. 5.00-5:00 F.M. - SAT. 1:30 TO S 465-3051
