Traffic Lights Go Summery Look out. The official start of summer may be almost two months away, but the state Department of Transportation (DOT) is starting to adjust traffic signals in the county to their summer cycles. Translation: longer waits at the busy intersections on Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway, and red lights instead of yellow on the barrier islands. Area Traffic Engineer John McCarthy said DOT starts early to "help local drivers adjust." There are a couple local exceptions, he said. Ocean City keeps its traffic lights going year-round, and Cape May hasn't settled on its schedule.
