J = Judges. Judges, specifically those of the U.S. Supreme Court, have considerable effect on the Social life of this nation. A recent acquisition entitled. God Save This Honorable Court; How the Choice of Supreme Court Justices Shapes Ot }r History, by Laurence U Tribe (347.73 T) sheds light on past and present justices. Tribe, a constitutional scholar and Harvard professor, shows how the choice of Supreme Court Justices shapes our lives and our nation's destiny in compelling prose. A whole section of the book is devoted to landmark decisions which were decided by a single vote, making the course of history hinge on the opinion of one person. ANOTHER SECTION of this important and persuasive book explodes some popular myths centered on Supreme Court justices
"Among these illfounded notions, discussed in fascinating detail, is 'the myth of the surprised president', which holds that Justices often turn away from the policies of those who appoint them." Quite the contrary, says Tribe: "presidents usually get exactly what they want from the persons they choose." Justices A Presidents; a Political History of Appointmets to the Supreme Court by Henry J. Abraham (347.732 A) is an anecdotal history of the courts, the presidental nominees and congressional approval process. THIS RELATES why Nixon fought so hard for the nomination of Carswell
and Haynsworth: how Roosevelt attempted to pack the court and other interesting episodes of Supreme Court History. In a lively and accessible style, Fred W. Friendly and Martha J.H. Elliot, who worked on the TV series, now have a book — The Constitution ■ That Delicate Balance '(Landmark cases that shaped the Constitution). In view of thfe upcoming Bicentennial celebration of our most important document — the Constitution, this book will appear at the head of many reading lists. THIS BOOK follows con stitutional history embued with the human drama that these cases decide: the facts, the choices behind those critical incidents that have shaped the course of American justice since the signing of the Constitution in 1787. Whenever possible, the authors interviewed the principal players in controversial cases, as well as their friends and relatives, the lawyers who prosecuted and defended them, the judges and jurors who passed sentence on them and the journalists who recorded their stories INFORMATIVE and entertaining, it illustrates
how the inalienable rights we take for granted have emerged from "a parade of disparate claims" brought by citizens and non-citizens demanding their day in court. The Great Reversals: Tales of the Supreme Court by Morris L. Ernst <347.73 E) recounts the 100 reversals that' have occured in the court's 200-year history. Ernst, a noted lawyer and advocate of First Amendment rights, shows the clash of Philosophies, the ingenuity of the opposing lawyers and the influence of the person^jities of men like Jefferson. Hamilton, -.Oliver Wendell Holmes and Earl Warren. THIS BOOK concen trates on the flexibilities of our court to accommodate the changing social composition of the American people Other titles of interest — The Douglas Opinions, by Vern Countryman; Inside the Warren Court 1953-1969. by Bernard Schwartz; Congress vs. the Supreme Court by Raoul Berger; The Brandeis/ Frankfurter Connection, by Bruce Allen Murphy, and Back to Back. SS Checks To Arrive A Day Early Monthly social security checks which are normally delivered on the third of May will be delivered May 2 instead, according to Del Brooks, manager of the Wildwood Social Security Office. "Benefit checks are mailed early when the usual delivery date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday". Brooks said. "In these instances, the checks are dated and delivered on the first day before the third of the month that is not a Saturday. Sunday or holiday." Brooks stated that this procedure helps reduce the problems that people have when they receive their checks and their banks are closed. These situations occur several times during the year, and Brooks advised that SSA would provide similar information about future early check delivery dates as they occur.
